As someone who hates comic books and movies about them, I really liked Iron Man. The first movie.

Deconstructs the whole superhero genre while telling a great story.

Has sci-fi and mystery elements as well.

@SomerSky - @GLguygardner is right -- Daredevil is set and shot completely in your neighborhood and the acting as well as writing is top notch. Just raise the brightness 10% on your TV.

As far as movies go -- Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the best comic book film ever IMO and it's also become my favorite film period. It has EVERYTHING this genre can offer in every way shape or form. Even pretentious film snob drips I know give it up for this film.

The first Captain America film (The First Avenger) is really good and underrated. I recommend watching that first to set the table for Cap 2.

I would put the first IRON MAN film as the next best.

This! X's a million. Even if you don't get the whole "deconstruction of the genre" just yet, it has a phenomenal story/mystery and wonderfully written characters plus it's structured in a unique way. Also, plenty of sci-fi elements to it. Don't be fooled by the superheroes and illustrations, it truely is literature.

Very good choice and doesn't get enough praise these days. Too forgotten. I can watch this over the Dark Knight films all day.

All three, a 12 comic series...a movie with a 3 hour and 40 minute director's cut and an omnibus with all 12 issues in one.

Just watch the movie, you won't have time for all those books.

@Maddux is right - there's a 3:40 directors cut now that should cover it nicely.

Probably more than you want to know

    https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Watchmen

"I suppose I was just thinking, 'That'd be a good way to start a comic book: have a famous super-hero found dead.' As the mystery unraveled, we would be led deeper and deeper into the real heart of this super-hero's world, and show a reality that was very different to the general public image of the super-hero."
