    I've got an old desktop that I'm thinking of using as a linux-based media server.
    Any suggestions?
    Besides shoving it up my ass.

    why not? it works. every so often there is an article in linux journal about setting them up as a NAS.

    yeah i would skip wireless. in my apt the wifi signal is regularly swamped by the neighbors so my servers are wired directly. wireless is fine for the clients tho

    client access is fine via a wifi ap, but i would connect the server to the router by wire.

    but I need software that can convert and play mkv and other file extensions for clients that don't support them
