Onyx Service & Solutions, Inc. announced that last week it has won approval for an $84 million (USD) solar power project for Roatan, Honduras.

The project capacity is currently 18.5 megawatts (MW) and is expected to use more than 65,000 280-watt (W) solar panels. Onyx sees this project as an opportunity to install its first branded 280W panels. Details of the 18.5MW solar project are available at this website.

Last Wednesday morning, Malcolm Burleson, Onyx president, and Rick Coens, project engineer, conducted a formal presentation of the 18.5MW project to Honduras's Governor of the Bay Islands, Shawn Hyde; Roatan Mayor, Julio Galindo; and a quorum of Council members at the Roatan Municipal Government chambers. The next steps for Onyx will be the completion of the agreement with the project's investors and the initiation of the regulatory processes.

Onyx management has identified a lucrative market for solar power projects in nations that use diesel-produced electricity. Roatan currently relies 100% on diesel-produced electricity. Solar power has been identified as a suitable economic solution to power the island, which is a tourist destination and a substantial source of revenues for Honduras. Roatan has a significant American population and is a suitable location for Onyx's first diesel-reduction solar project. The July 2011 issue of Islands Magazine rated Roatan the #1 island in the world on which to retire.

    :D

This is great news for us. The current company, RECO, is basically a monopoly and charges whatever the fuck they want :)

And did you catch that, "Islands Magazine rated Roatan the #1 island in the world on which to retire." ?? :p
