Fairport, N.Y. – To err is human; to forgive, divine. But what happens when that error is etched in stone?

A mistake made on a grave marker is giving a man from Fairport a much-needed chuckle.

Anne and Ken Brown’s love story began at a teacher’s convention 46 years ago. The young woman from Rush was a student at Houghton College, a small Christian school in the Southern Tier.

“I thought she was pretty nice, and she thought I was pretty nice,” Ken said. “But I was going to Ithaca College, which was a little different than Houghton College.”

When Anne died of cancer in April 2015, she had gotten to know all five of her grandchildren – all girls – and knew two more – both boys – were on the way.

As they had done with all big decisions made as a couple, Ken took his time choosing a stone that would sit atop their graves. It was installed just this week.

“So I come up after work yesterday,” Ken said. “And I walk up and I’m looking at it – and I did a double-take.”

Somehow, a mistake had been made. Anne’s date of birth and death are correct, but under Ken’s birthday is a date of death – September 24, 2044.

Ken is very much alive, which makes seeing a death date 28 years in the future a bit of a shock for him.

He said he can hear in his mind how his late wife would have reacted.

“Because, when she would get yanked up about something, her voice would go up kind of high, but about three minutes later she’d look at it, laugh about it and say, ‘Well, that’s kind of funny,’” Ken said. “I mean, it’s somebody’s mistake. How many of us have made mistakes in our jobs, right?”

Ken, with patience honed over years as a violin teacher, did not make an angry phone call to the engraver. He wouldn’t even share who it was for this story. But the 2044 engraving has provided a lot of laughs for him and his family.

In case you were wondering, Ken is 68, and he would be 96 in the year 2044.

“My mother turns 98 next month, so that’s a realistic possibility,” Ken said. “It’s funny, somebody responded on Facebook, a friend who does insurance. He says, ‘Make sure you call me on September 23, 2044. I’ll get you a really nice insurance policy.’”

The big question that remains is how does a mistake like this happen? When Ken told the monument company about the mistake, they simply said they would make a new one, no explanation given.

My wife had a custom painted urn made for the ashes of a dog of ours that passed away a while ago. It looked fine, had a painting of the dog on it and everything. Then I noticed that the birth date the lady put on it had our dog living to age 23, instead of 13. It's just a dog, so I didn't complain.

Actually, these mistakes happen all the time. They have a granite epoxy that makes mistakes like that an easy fix. Once repaired, it's as if the stone had never been cut.
