    • MILWAUKEE (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman sparked a social media fight by telling a Milwaukee TV station that Wisconsin's newly enacted voter ID law will help the GOP's eventual nominee win the White House.

WTMJ-TV reports Wednesday (http://bit.ly/1VwNMMr ) that a video link to the comment had been retweeted hundreds of times with critics calling it a gaffe that shows the law was intended to suppress the Democratic vote.

The voter ID law went into effect recently after lengthy court battle. Gov. Scott Walker signed the bill after the Republican-controlled Legislature passed it in 2011.

Supporters say it prevents fraud. Critics say it's restrictive and disenfranchises young, poor and minority voters who support liberals and are less likely to have mandated ID.

Grothman's office didn't immediately return phone or email messages.

How does showing an ID suppress someone's ability to vote? I needed to show an ID to obtain a Library card.

If you are too stupid to figure out how to obtain an ID you are too stupid to select our commander in chief.

Biggest phony issue ever. I don't understand why the R's don't go after the D's on this as the argument is so simple:

Clearly, Democrats think blacks are too stupid and lazy to go out and get an ID. That is crazy-racist.

    so what id's are acceptable?
if this is a big enough issue and we all agree we want citizens to vote
then can't we make a simple national id for voting alone--where the cost isn't an issue

this can't be the hardest issue to be done with

and that's one white dude right there

im not against it, but im also not going to pretend the only reason Rs are for is because it helps them win.
    no politician cares about fairness.

IMO, all election law changes should take 4 year to go into effect.
then u wouldnt have ppl angling to win elections on procedure, rather than good ideas

Wisconsin just had it biggest primary turnout since 1972, Yeah these laws are really holding people back from voting.

I'm a Democrat and have no problem showing my ID to vote. Makes complete sense to me.

You'd pretty much have to be homeless to not be able to produce an i.d. The counter is always that there isn't enough cases of fraud to warrant the need. I guess I've pretty much figured out that this is one of those issues they whip out like abortion and guns to distract us from our ass fucking.

We go to Iraq and Afghanistan to spread democracy and organize elections. I bet we didn't make those people show ID.

I vote by mail anyway, much easier.

Voter suppression can be accomplished in many ways.

    Arizona for example:
aricopa County had 60 polling stations. There were at least 200 polling stations in that jurisdiction in 2012, but Republican officials said they decreased the number to save money.
Even after waiting in line for hours, some people were not allowed to vote. At least 20 Democratic voters contacted the Arizona Democratic Party to say that when they arrived at the polls, they were told that they were registered as independents and therefore unable to vote in the closed primary.

The Department of Justice is requesting additional information from an Arizona election official after lawmakers and activists alleged voter suppression during the Arizona presidential primary last month.

Gotta love the Republicans and their "fiscal responsibility", spending taxpayer money to solve a problem that doesn't exist. Look at all the money wasted on drug testing food stamp recipients.

I'm from Wisconsin and we had the largest turnout for a primary since 1972. It's a load of horse crap that the left likes to keep throwing out there.

Lets be clear, voter suppression is committed by both sides, no side is innocent. In large urban areas you will find democrats pulling the same shenanigans.
