'This is so freaking mean': Outraged Caitlyn Jenner fans take to Twitter after Halloween retailer launches costume based on the star's Vanity Fair look
    • Spirit Halloween revealed plans to launch the Caitlyn costume
    • The outfit has since become available to buy online at Anytime Costumes
    • Fans and members of transgender community voiced outrage on Twitter
    • A petition has been launched to have the costume removed from stores

A costume company is under mounting pressure to scrap a Caitlyn Jenner Halloween outfit after it sparked outrage on Twitter.

Fans and members of the transgender community were up in arms after a version of the Call Me Caitlyn ensemble, based on the star's Vanity Fair look, went on sale online.

They argue that the $74.99 (£47.48) unisex costume - which consists of a wig, bodice and sash printed with the words 'Call Me Caitlyn' - encourages 'transphobia'.:confused:o_O:rolleyes:

Several US Halloween companies have come under fire after making the decision to sell Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costumes based on her Vanity Fair cover. Pictured: It is available to buy on Anytime Costumes

Spirit Halloween first announced plans to launch the controversial costume across several pop up stores last week.

And quickly another version of the outfit become available to buy on retail sites anytimecostumes.com and wholesalehalloweencostumes.com
It features a white bodice and hot pants, similar to the clothes worn by Caitlyn on the now iconic cover of Vanity Fair - where she unveiled her feminine identity for the first time.

The shoot itself was praised for challenging stereotypes and bringing transgender issues to the forefront of people's minds.

Fans of Caitlyn and members of the transgender community have taken to Twitter to express their outrage

Many have slammed the costume as mean-spirited and tasteless in a series of angry tweets

Spirit Halloween was the first company to announce plans to sell the Caitlyn Jenner costume for Halloween

Another costume featuring former Olympian Caitlyn in her running gear, complete with wig and sash, was featured on another website - Buy Costumes - but has since been taken down.

Fans of Caitlyn and members of the transgender community have taken to Twitter to express their outrage, calling the costume extremely insensitive and tasteless.

One woman Michelle Vidrine believed it promoted ideas of exclusion, tweeting: 'What kind of society are we to allow people to mock @Caitlyn_Jenner on Halloween with a costume! We got some work to do on inclusion.'

Others remarked that it was no better than bullying.

Kellie Knapp wrote: 'This is so freaking mean and cruel. Cait is courageous and beautiful and yes even a role model. How dare people.'

Many users have chosen to attack the company directly on Twitter for promoting 'bigotry'

Fans have come up with a variety of ways to slam the company and voice their views on the subject

Molly Rose added: '@SpiritHalloween making a costume out of Caitlyn Jenner and "tranny granny" is disgusting and mean-spirited. You've lost my business.'

Addison Rose Vincent, a Transfeminine Genderqueer activist, launched a petition on Change.org asking for Spirit Halloween to cancel the launch of the offending product.

She wrote: 'To Spirit Halloween: We demand that you revoke your ideas and production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume for Halloween.

Addison Rose Vincent, who refers to herself as a Transfeminine Genderqueer activist, launched a petition on Change.org asking for Spirit Halloween to scrap the outfit

'With a reputation of sexist, racist, and culturally appropriative costumes, we are concerned that this costume will continue your oppressive tradition with a transphobic costume of Caitlyn Jenner.

'To make a costume out of a marginalized identity reduces that person and community to a stereotype for privileged people to abuse. In this case, if you follow through with production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume, cisgender people will purchase it to make fun of her and our community.

'Do not turn Cailtyn Jenner into a costume. Your profit will only lead to greater transphobia and marginalization of an already at-risk community. Much appreciated, Addison Rose Vincent.'

Many voiced concern that the company was making light of an important subject

Several Twitter users even made threats towards anyone who planned to wear the costume

An online petition urging the company to revoke the costume has received more than 1,300 signatures so far.

It was launched on Change.org by Addison Rose Vincent, who refers to herself as a Transfeminineo_O Genderqueer activist.

However Trisha Lombardo, the Spirit Halloween's PR, told New York Daily NewsConfidenti@l that the costume was intended to be a compliment.

After the launch, she explained: 'Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year, and Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her.' :)

I wonder if they're as upset when there's been Kim Kardashian costumes the last handful of years. Caitlyn is a public figure, shut the fuck up. That narcissistic lunatic wants the publicity, she's gotta deal with it.

So it's okay to dress like Bruce but not like Caitlyn? I'm confused.

He went full out public with it, so he's fair game. For the record, I think that costume is hysterical.
