Patrick (Scott) Johnson and trooper Gabriel (Gabe) Rich, of the troopers' Fairbanks rural service unit, were following up on a report from Wednesday that someone had brandished a weapon in Tanana, a tiny town of 238 people on the Tanana River.
The troopers were shot dead by “a young kid†in his 20s, the manager at the village store in town told the Anchorage Daily News.

............Much remains unclear, but what is known is troopers Sgt. Patrick “Scott” Johnson and Gabriel “Gabe” Rich, both members of the Fairbanks Rural Service Unit, were killed in the line of duty. They were reportedly responding to a report from Wednesday night that a man had brandished a gun in the village.

According to reports from several residents local man Arvin Kangas became irate when he wasn’t paid $150 for a couch. He allegedly tried to remove the couch from the buyer’s home, and allegedly made threats to some of the villagers, which one resident took seriously enough to call Tanana’s village public safety officer. According to online court records, Kangas was charged Thursday with fourth-degree assault and driving without a valid license, both misdemeanors.

Village public safety officers are unarmed peace officers employed by Native nonprofit corporations with state funding. Money from the state is passed through to the nonprofits, covering the officers’ salaries and benefits. But the nonprofits write the paychecks and decide whom to hire.

VPSO Mark Haglin called for backup from the troopers in Fairbanks, 130 miles east of Tanana. They tried to arrest Kangas, several residents reported.

What happened next is uncertain, but ensuing events left two troopers dead, and one man, Kangas, holed up inside a village home. Reports from village residents, which couldn't immediately be confirmed, said a second man had shot the officers and had been detained earlier.

According to Pat Moore, a member of the Tanana city council, who said he heard the information from law enforcement officers, Kangas’ son Sach emerged from their First Avenue home and allegedly shot and killed the two troopers. Someone was able to arrest the younger man, but Kangas wandered off with an assault rifle and ended up in a home a block away on Eamole Street.

Ruby Cruger, a relative of the two men involved, and several other village residents gave a similar account of events. Law enforcement officials have not yet offered an account of how the shootings happened. Sach was flown out of the village earlier in the day after being arrested. Charges in the case have yet to be filed.

Troopers spent several hours outside the home, taking cover behind rusty pickup trucks and log sheds waiting for Kangas to emerge. He eventually exited the house around 10:25 p.m...................

The truth is that most men and women who become cops do it because they are too stupid to have real jobs.

Nathaniel Lee Kangas, 19, charged with murder, Arvin Morse Kangas, 58, arrested on outstanding warrant
    [IMG]

An investigation is still under way in the Interior community a hundred-plus miles west of Fairbanks, Nathanial Lee Kangas, 19, was arrested for allegedly shooting Sgt. Patrick "Scott" Johnson and Trooper Gabriel "Gabe" Rich.

Arvin Morse Kangas, 58, was arrested for an outstanding warrant and charged with fourth-degree assault and driving with a revoked license. The charges stem from an April 30 incident involving a Tanana village public safety officer.

According to a written statement from Cockrell distributed at the press conference, Tanana VPSO Mark Haglin had a confrontation with Arvin Kangas Wednesday night which involved Kangas "pointing a shotgun at VPSO Haglin as he drove by his residence."

Haglin called the Fairbanks AST office for backup, with Johnson and Rich arriving at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

"Troopers made contact with Arvin Kangas near the front door of his residence," Cockrell wrote. "While attempting to place Kangas under arrest a struggle ensued, this resulted in all three entering into the Kangas' residence. While inside the residence both troopers were shot and killed by Nathanial Kangas."

While Nathanial Kangas was taken into custody shortly afterward, Arvin Kangas fled to a local home and didn't surrender to troopers until about 10:25 p.m. Thursday. Both were taken to Fairbanks.

Charges pending against Nathanial Kangas as of Friday afternoon include two counts of first-degree murder, as well as one count of third-degree assault for actions allegedly taken against Haglin. He is expected to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Fairbanks.
