Usually per capita is the way to go, but maybe breaking it down by precinct in this way is deceiving because a place like Midtown has a massive influx of non-residents coming in during the day as well as tourists. So most of Midtown to Lower Manhattan looks worse than it really is.

That map is misleading when it comes to Manhattan. It's crimes per resident. More people commute in and out of the city than live there so that sques the numbers.

Can we see this in real time? Might be better entertainment than the movies.

I'm not from New York, but I'm curious if this map might be racist.

So by extension then, a map that reflects statistics and facts has to be racist.

I figured as much, but I hadn't checked out MSNBC or the DailyKos yet to confirm.

Are any of you New Yorkers surprised at all by that section of the Lower East Side that shows a low crime rate? For some reason I always thought that area had a large concentration of those massive public housing projects.

Pretty low crime rate. New Yorkers are drama queens.
