The incident happened on Boulderwoods Drive around 7:35 Monday night. Three officers arrived at the residence and attempted to contact any occupants inside. When no contact was made, the officers made their way around to the rear of the home and gained entry to the residence through a screened porch. The G.B.I. said police went through a "reportedly unlocked door".

Upon entry, the officers encountered a dog. Two officers fired their weapons striking and killing the animal. A male in the home, later determined to be the homeowner, was also shot by the responding officers.

One of the police officers was shot. The G.B.I. says their early investigation indicates the officer was likely shot accidentally by one of the other officers at the scene.

The poor bastard is in HIS house, minding HIS own business and is shot --at what point did the cops fear for their lives?

We don't know the whole story.
Frequently homeowners think it's a break in and come out with a gun.
    Still senseless

So sad, the poor dog was only protecting his home and owner. Why not just surround the house? Instead of barging in guns blazing.

I'm guessing that they had reliable sources which led them to mistakenly enter a mans house.
That dog probably attacked them or looked like it was about to. It had to be shot.
The man entered the room without whistling first so obviously he startled them and posed a threat and therefore got shot... in the leg... where the cops are trained to shoot a person.
The other cop got shot during the struggle that the homeowner caused after getting shot.
    It's all very simple.

(not clicking the link) Guessing this happened in Georgia, DeKalb County, where they pay their officers $14.00 per hour. You always get what you pay for.

No reliable source, no address given for the residence. The police just guessed at which address to investigate. The dog was doing what a dog is supposed to do, bark at intruders. I really hope your being sarcastic

Can cops just barge in like that? Don't they have to get permission or announce themselves ?

Shortly after 7:30 p.m. Monday, three DeKalb County police officers were dispatched to a burglary call on Boulderwoods Drive, just off Bouldercrest Road, about a mile south of I-20. Derek Perez, the man who made the 911 call, wrote on Facebook that he’d told police about a possible burglar outside of “the farthest house at the end of the street.”

The officers, however, stopped at Chris and Leah McKinley’s home — the second house on the street — because it matched the “physical description” given, according to a release from the GBI.

The officers went to the rear of the home, onto the screened-in porch and through a “reportedly unlocked rear door,” the GBI said.

According to neighbors, that’s when Chris McKinley — who’d been watching a movie called “Serendipity” with his wife and 1-year-old — walked into the room with his dog. Authorities said two of the officers opened fire after they “encountered a dog.”

“He says, ‘I opened the door to see what the dogs were barking at, and I see black uniforms and I hear pop-pop-pop-pop’,” Colson said, relaying McKinley’s words.

Just disgusting. I hope these cops are punished. This isn't protecting or serving anyone.
    This is total incompetence
