I rented for the longest time just because I didn't want to mess with setting the thing up. Found a good one on sale and bit the bullet.

Happy to say, it was pretty easy to setup. I can't remember for sure but I don't think I even talked to anyone at Comcast. Just followed the instructions on their web site.

    I don't know......

Never thought about it. Wife pays the fios bill.

The Verizon Fios modem, isn't it proprietary? I can't go out and buy a modem to upgrade or replace it, correct?

What kind of nerd am I.... . :bigcry:

I've seen the work these cable guys do, fucking horrible. Drill thru hardwood floors, and window frames etc. Cause their too lazy to fish thru the walls properly... Or stupid. They don't support the cables properly.... Cause the don't have to be inspected. Being an inside wireman for over 20 years, I'd get fired if I did work like that.

I took there shit out, ran it properly throughout the house, punch down my own rj45s and 8p 8c and installed it according to the TIA/EIA standards.

I just bought my own cable modem and router this past year. Both cost me $60 instead of $10 a month forever.

Same here cable vision gives you modem, don't have to pay for it, but also can't change it to a different one

I just went through my periodic, unauthorized, mandatory, annual rate hike. Actually, it seems to creep up 4 or 5 bucks per month. You don't even notice it until its 20-30 bucks higher at which point you go WTF and get mad at them...again.

Time for my annual call to politely ask for a cheaper plan (that gives me the exact same thing, or possibly even more) while holding back my anger.

That's unbelievable. Time for a universal remote (or if you have the right phone, make use of the IR feature and use it as a remote)

Any recommendations on how an amatuer could do this? We are wanting to run our own hardwired RJ45 throught the house and install jacks in a few rooms. But the whole damn house is plaster, not drywall - so were dealing with lathe, etc.

Yeah that works. Ever try 43khw cable, cap it with photo synthesized connectors and plug it into a WTX366? It works great with the Everwatch JK26-A0H 24mm HD box.

Plaster walls can be a real bitch, tough to cut, chicken wire, and messy, and harder to patch......but i can be done. Take your time, and plan out your route the best as possible.

Most homes have a vent that runs from the basement (1st floor) to the attic. If you find something like this, you use that for you vertical runs...but running horizontally thru plaster can get difficult. I can stress enough to take the time to walk thru the house, and find where the electrical is run, where the ducts go, plumbing etc....use these spots to help you plan your run.

I could walk you thru a punch down, but it maybe easier to watch some youtube videos.....you would use a 568b standard for your color codes....better yet your Cat5 or Cat6 jacks will have a color code on them....most of the time they will be labled with 568A and 568B....follow the 568b. But crimping the 8p 8c connector is a little different and requires a different tool (RJ45 requires a punch tool, the 8p 8c jack that you plug into your modem uses a crimper)

The FOA fiber optic ass. on youtube has a ton of videos to help you.

Worse case, you could use wire mold....it is a surface mounted raceway, but if planned out well, you could make it look nice.

Let me know if I can help you more......GL
