Do you think they see the irony in this?

    http://minnesota.publicradio.org/di...the-wind-too-controversial-in-new-ulm?refid=0

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A New Ulm theater has canceled a production of "Inherit the Wind" after objections that the play is not compatible with the Bible.
The New Ulm Actors Community Theatre held auditions, found a place to put on the play, and began rehearsals when the director, a student at Martin Luther College, backed out. A college official confirmed to the New Ulm Journal the school asked the student not to participate because the play is critical of creationism.
Several actors left for the same reason, so the theater board voted to cancel the play, said New Ulm Actors Theatre Executive Director Paul Warshauer.
"This is America, the year is 2013," he said. "I think there's a good discussion to be had here about the power of thought and respect of all opinions, and that's what we were hoping to do with this play."
The theatre may do the play next year with a different director, said Warshauer.
Inherit the Wind is a fictionalized account of the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial, which ended in a high school teacher's conviction under Tennessee law for speaking to a class about evolution.

I just said it in another thread, but we're as close to the 1950's in terms of culture and suppression of speech, as well as trust in big business and technology, as we've ever been. It's pretty sad that music and words you could broadcast in the 90's are done for, and it's not a liberal or conservative thing, people forget that Tipper Gore and Joe Lieberman are the ones who really got the FCC crackdown going.

I'd agree to a point but I would be remiss if I didn't point out that 'Inherit the Wind' was written in the mid 50s and first made into a film in 1960.

I guess what I was getting it is that it pissed people off and there were protests when it came out, and then by the 70's it was pretty much cool as cucumber. Now it pisses people off and is controversial again. :dontknow:

Powerful fucking scene! All too much like today, huh?
Steppenwolf nailed it as well back in 1968 with The Ostrich!

We'll call you when you're six years old
And drag you to the factory
To train your brain for eighteen years
    With promise of security
    But then you're free
And forty years you waste to chase the dollar sign
So you may die in Florida
At the pleasant age of sixty nine

The water's getting hard to drink
We've mangled up the country side
The air will choke you when you breathe
    We're all committing suicide
    But it's alright
It's progress folks keep pushin' till your body rots
Will strip the earth of all it's green
And then divide her into parking lots

But there's nothing you and I can do
You and I are only two
What's right and wrong is hard to say
    Forget about it for today
We'll stick our heads into the sand
Just pretend that all is grand
And hope that everything turns out okay

But there's nothing you and I can do
You and I are only two
What's right and wrong is hard to say
    Forget about it for today
We'll stick our heads into the sand
Just pretend that all is grand
And hope that everything turns out okay

You're free to speak your mind my friend
As long as you agree with me
    Don't criticize the fatherland
Or those who shape your destiny
    'Cause if you do
You'll lose your job, your mind and all the friends you knew
We'll send out all our boys in blue
They'll find a way to silence you

But there's nothing you and I can do
You and I are only two
What's right and wrong is hard to say
    Forget about it for today

The entire content fits though. We have several generations of kids that were taught from the earliest age, that if you studied hard and did well? You could be anything you want.
Now we have kids coming out of college with degrees and nowhere to go with them. And the debt they're carrying because they did what they were taught to do?

Out of the entire industry, only Dee Snider, John Denver and Frank Zappa testified before that committee. I believe it was voluntary testimony, so the claim that Snider was "summoned" is a little misleading.

Nice to see each one throw a monkey wrench into the proceedings.

When can we have some frank and open dialog about my belief that the dental industry is dangerously anti-Tooth-Fairy?

Didn't really matter because a large percentage of the population didn't have color TV. I can remember the first time I saw one.
This family lived across the street from us and the father was a mailman by day and a TV Repairman by night. Somehow he finagled a color tv. To make a short story long, one evening they invited all the neighborhood kids over to watch The Wizard of Oz.
I can still remember the reaction in the room when she opened that door. WOAHHHH! :jj:

i don't believe that's the reason they canceled the production. while it may be a controversial topic for a few morons, society as a whole believes in evolution or is at least open to the idea of discussions about it.
this isn't a backwater town in oklahoma, it's minnesota which is one of the most liberal states in the US. my guess is that it was a scheduling or financial decision.

Did you read the article? The Lutheran college where the director and a few of the actors were based asked/told them not to do it.

Also I'd remind you that Michelle Bachmann has a Congressional seat in this state. In the more rural areas it can be pretty damn conservative in this state.
