As many of you know, I've had Monty since June. He's 9 months old. He's pretty much scared of his own shadow, he does eventually warm up to people, but when he gets scared he gets up under me, and if someone comes close to me (like to give me a hug hello or goodbye) he snaps at them.

This is a behavior that I can't tolerate. Thanks in advance

Would the dog back down with that behavior, if threatened with a lawsuit?

Seriously, take him to a trainer, for individual stuff, and then group...that pup needs socialization.

    anyone

he is socialized, he goes to camp 3x a week, and they do work with him. I'm the variable. I think I will do some private sessions with him. The owner of the daycare is a State Police canine cop

He may have had some early attachment problems & now he feels secure with you and territorial. I think you should take him to a professional trainer. Nip it in the bud now.

Seriously. This is a dog that has assumed the dominant position in your pack and is now protecting you from a perceived threat. You should correct this behavior when it happens by immediately grabbing the dog by the scruff of its neck with your hand firmly as if you were another dog biting it, and say "no".

Nixx is like this as well - but she doesn't snap at them, she growls and barks. If they put their hands on me, she'll grab them with her teeth and pull them away from me - from my kids to my boyfriend. She is VERY possessive. She doesn't hurt with her teeth - but she'll latch on and simply try to drag them off me.

She cannot be in my room when I have sex.

I think it's in the breed. (not that I know what her OR Monty's breed is, she's a rescue as well)

It also comes down to the fact that she knows you are her soul protector and provider, and it's inherent in dogs to protect us.

I do that---I really don't think he's the Alpha---when he comes near me, it's more to hide than to protect me. When a stranger comes into the house he barks, but totally backs away, and hides behind the couch.

Heathcliff on the other hand, was the Alpha

think he doesn't spend enough time with other people, dogs, etc. maybe he needs playtime sessions with others. by me the dog people put up fenced in runs in Riverside Park and meet 3 times a day for coffee while their dogs socialize in the fenced in areas. dogs are at best 5 yr old children for life; if you kept a 5 yr old boy at home all the time with his mom, he grows up a mamma's boy. pet dogs can also grow up mamma's boys. they need playtime to socialize just like kindergarten kids.

I'm not a big fan of trainers working your dog because they aren't in your pack. They should only be consulted to train you.
