if you don't really know the person's family, you only met the person at work a few months ago, and are going just to be polite, how long do you stay at the wake? walk in, say "i'm sorry...he was a great man..." and leave?

Express condolences, in a sincere way, and then fade into the background.

Your being there, to show respect to the deceased person's family, will be appreciated and remembered.

Say sorry, then leave. Or don't go.

I usually walk over to the casket and thump the body to see if he/she's really dead...no sense burying the living

thanks dough. i liked the dude a lot but i don't really know him that well or his family at all. i don't want to be intrusive there; i just want to pay my respects.

:secret:I question that statement...I can give you a short list of people who I think it would make perfect sense to bury.

show up, say a few words to the family or not, kneel/stand at the casket or not, sit down and reflect for 5 min or not, stay for the ceremony or not, leave

    Sure thing.

You are not intruding. If they wanted privacy, there would be no wake.

I don't go to wakes. Fuck being in a room with a dead body. Creepy motherfucking shit.
Send a card and make a donation to whatever charity handles what he died from.
