Just started watching this show. Ive been avoiding it like the plague because of how much people hyped it up. OK so a couple of opinions:
    1. The acting from Tony is great, but other than that everyone is a cartoon character version of a mobster.
    2. Why the fuck is it in New Jersey? Why would anyone care about a mob show in NJ? There are no recognizable locations, and the most famous mobsters are NYers. Plus, who cares about NJ??
    3. Italians don't act like them. Sorry. Not even connected Italians act like them or talk like them. Is this what people outside of NY think how italians are? Or is this just a new jersey italian thing that I dont understand.
    4. When does the show hit its stride, because I'm ready to give up this show now.
    Thank you for any opinions.

They get into the New Jersey - New York ties a little later in the series.

You already started with more than great expectations, albeit possibly subconsciously. Big mistake if you can't disassociate yourself from the hype that you've heard. Just watch and be patient. Most shows suck in their first season. Shit, Seinfeld really is un-watchable IMHO for the first TWO seasons. Judging by Jersey Shore, I think a lot of the Jersey douchebags are laughable. However, stereotypes exist for a reason.
It may not be for you. No biggie. Just keep watching at least thru S2.

They should have made it in NY from the beginning. Would love to see some places I'd recognize.

I borrowed the entire show on DVD from a friend. I'll watch to season 2 if that's what you suggest.

THEN it would have been like many other shows/movies. And admit it, it's gotta be easier/cheaper filming in Jersey. Make it REAL interesting and have a show about the mob in Ohio.

It's about the mob, not the mob in a sight seeing video of New York. Just give it a few episodes.

I just started watching Gilligan's Island and it's in black and white. Will this ever be in color, and what would happen if the Harlem Globetrotters accidentally came to the island?

I started watching it late also, not until 2005. Let's face it, NJ is basically NY's backyard. :jj:

I thought the series was great, up until Christopher wanted to make that stupid "Mafia Horror" movie. The whole plot of it was stupid and a waste of episodes.

Unfortunately the 3 people that I hated from the show never got wacked. Carmella - a joker faced bitchy cunt, Janice - Tony's fat & ugly hippy shithead sister, and of course AJ - a generation Z fucking douchebag (and a horrible actor).

Have you ever heard real gangsters talk? The Gotti tapes? They sound just like the characters on the show.

Umm...what? I was born and raised in NY and had family in Jersey. That's exactly how Jersey Italians act.

Yes I have heard those tapes. Those videos were made on 98th street and 101st avenue in Ozone park NY where I grew up.
OK so its jersey Italians then. Because I don't know anyone in my family who talks like them. We're all from Brooklyn and Queens.

The 1990's were a period in American history where Italians and semi-Italians rose to prominence in films, TV and on stage. Italians played roles as diverse as gangsters, mobsters, and skit comics. As Americans became more PC during the 2000's, most Italians returned to roles in the service industry or just stabbed themselves out of work.

People in NJ love this shit. I never watched it, but the NJians still talk about it.
Also, for some reason, Italians in NJ pronounce their heritage as "I-talian". (?)
(I live in NJ but did not grow up here).

David Chase who created the series is an NJ Italian (Chase is a stage name). Anyway, he's from Clifton and actually helped coach Gandolfini on the NJ accent (if you pay close attention in the first season, Gandolfini slips out of it a few times, and later on in the sixth season actually speaks in his real voice).

Agreed, just fast forward past the shrink... Nothing good ever happens in that office. Apart from that, watch the first season, then ask questions.

In ad tion to the normal stuff, you'll need to get past the fact that it's dated... Cordless phones, computers, etc make. Look old, but it holds up ok.
