I'm NOT talking about anything illegal here. Mods if you are uncomfortable, my apologies and please delete.

Sometimes I will download something from Usenet. The file will be in WinRar. I extract the file and it is an executable file (.exe). I normally do a virus scan of the RAR file and then I do a virus scan of the .exe file. They come up clean.

I try to open the .exe file and nothing happens. Nothing. I then do a full computer virus scan and it comes up clean. I am very paranoid about getting virus/trojan, whatever, so I do lots of checks with different programs. I'm fairly certain I'm not infected with anything.

I see a lot of these types of files. I normally do not try to execute them but once in a while I do it just to see what happens. It's always the same thing. I've done research and found nothing mentioned.

Anybody know what is going on with these files? I'm sure it is something insidious, but I haven't been able to figure it out.

Make sure you're giving the exe's permission to run.

It's probably worse than spyware. I'm probably infecting you by just answering your post.

I do run as administrator. Is there more to it than that?

No, a window would pop up.
Next time you run one check the processes in task manager.

In Processes, it starts a process that lasts for about 15 seconds then disappears.

On a related note, I had 8 instances of Chrome running and only had 3 tabs open. That was one of the reasons I dumped Firefox

good rule of thumb is never open an .exe file that you don't 100% know what it is - ever

That's pretty much impossible. Anyone can rename an .exe file. Unless it's wrapped in cellophane and you buy it in a store, it can be suspect.
