Question for Computer Nerds : Update Edition

A week or so ago I started a thread complaining that my desktop Vista machine was lagging real bad. I got all kinds of suggestions for which I was greatly appreciative. So now, here's the update:

I ended up doing a restore back a couple of weeks. This seemed to fix the problem but a new one immediately popped up. My PC started completely freezing on me. At first, it was several hours apart but it kept getting closer together. Eventually, it would freeze about every 5 minutes or so. Really fucking pissed me off.

I tried to do chkdsk and it would run part way then freeze. Running partial chkdsk several times finally ate away enough of the Vista program that it would no longer fully boot. I tried all kinds of boot disks to run chkdsk independently but could not get anything to work. My theory is that the proprietary Bios from HP was stopping it and trying to boot from the HD. I was unable to shut off booting from the HD completely. I even had a copy of DOS 6.22 that I tried. Homey didn't play at all.

I tried to do a complete restore from the partition that had the installation program. No luck. The HD was fucked up beyond all recognition. I could not get that hard drive repaired.

I went out and bought a Sandisk 240G SSD and a fresh copy of Win 7. Installed them. While I was installing the new HD, I noticed that the heat sync and fan on my video card was fucked up. It had never been attached properly from the factory. I tried to move it just a little bit and the fucker fell apart on me. I went ahead and finished the install thinking that the fan and heat sync were probably overkill anyway :rolleye:. When I fired it up, the video card lasted about 30 seconds and overheated. So I had to run out and buy a new fucking video card. I ended up with a 1g DDR3 card (I don't game at all).

When I put everything together, it was like I had a new PC! OS loads almost instantly, even though I have the slowest PCI/16 connection. Graphics load faster than I have ever seen in my life! I am still running on only 3m of memory. I can't wait until I can get more mem to see how much more it improves.

Now that I have the old Hard Drive removed, I am going to try to do an Fdisk on it and see if it is salvageable.

Just wanted to update everyone who helped and made suggestions. Moral of the story: If it's broken, throw money at it.

Vista sucks cock even when it's a fresh, perfect install.

Back up all your porn, music, pics and text files, then reinstall with Windows 7 (if computer supports it, which it should) or XP. This is the only answer you are going to get to resolve your problem.

Is it possible that you didn't read the whole OP?

I fixed it. New SSD HD, New Win 7.

I keep all my data on separate Hard drives. I have at least 3 backups at all times. I'm paranoid like that.

Is it possible? LOLOL! Who the fuck would read all that shit, especially when you start out by trying to save a Vista install?

So what the fuck was the question? Say what you mean, and mean what you say.

Do you need any data off the old drive, or are you just trying to save the HDD for future use/storage?

    :c

There was no question. I just wanted to let the people who tried to help me know how it turned out.

I need nothing. Especially a date. The old hard drive only contained programs for which I had the original disks. I don't really give a shit about it because it's only 500M but I will probably screw around with it to see if it is physically broken or if it just has some bad sectors that can be repaired.

    Good job.

For just a little more than you paid for the solid state drive, video card, and Windows 7 you could have gotten a very nice i5, 1TB, 3GB, DVD Burner, webcam, Win7 64 bit ($499)...and done even better if you were getting a desktop replacement. With the new prices so competitive, sometimes it's not worth putting the money in the old one, but you still may not have needed the new drive and might have saved the video card, so just replacing the OS with Win7 would have been the way to go had that been the case.

Well, actually, this is one time that it really wasn't a PC problem. It was the hard drive. The hard drives are cross platform and can go out just as easily on a Mac as a PC but I see your point.
