So it's cold in NY today. Really cold. And windy.

I was walking past a store and saw on old man - in his 80's maybe - outside the store trying to light a cigarette in this miserable weather. And that got me to thinking:

What specific things does a smoker feel in their body that make their brain say "I need a cigarette"?

They really hate their job. Multiple times a day, they can walk out and stand and socialize and the bosses won't even think twice about it. I know people who have taken up smoking, or at least pretended to, to get the extra idle time at work.

Nicotine causes physical dependence, so once a person has consumed X number of cigarettes, the body craves the nicotine (just like heroin). When an addicted smoker goes without nicotine, he/she becomes a little agitated, feels uncomfortable and has an intense craving for the chemical nicotine (via cigarette smoke). So the nicotine really only satisfies the craving and relieves the agitation which was only caused by not consuming nicotine. A cigarette and nicotine alone doesn't really offer any mood altering effects for a non-smoker, all it does is satisfy the craving of an addicted smoker.

Think of it this way, when you're incredibly hungry, you crave food, you then eat, you enjoy the food while eating, it tastes good and it satisfies the craving. However, the food itself doesn't get you high in anyway. It's the same thing with nicotine addiction.

It will probably make you feel a little dizzy and nauseous. However, that's not a buzz, as in giving you a feeling of euphoria. Of course, you may still be experiencing a little nicotine withdrawal, even after a week without, so you might mistake the satisfaction of relieving the craving for a buzz, but that's only so because your satisfying the addiction by consuming nicotine.

    Nicotine. It’s very, very addicting.

So glad I quit in 1995.
