Should I read the book first or watch the movie first?

They are two completely different mediums and should be judged accordingly and by their own merits...not juxtaposed or in contrast, as frequently happens.

99.5% of the time the book is better than the movie - which is the case here too. But often that is due to the need to compress a full boo into a 90 min movie.

This movie is pretty true to the book - but the book is funnier. And of course more detailed.

If you know little about the story - see the movie first. Then when you read the book It will then be like viewing a beautiful drawing - and then watching it be filled in with colorful detail.

For whatever it is worth.....the book should be a kind of quick read for most people.

I liked the book a whole bunch....I didn't "love" it.

IMO...the book first is the way to go.....but of course that will spoil quite a number of things for you when it comes to viewing the film.

The film is pretty pictures...the book kind of paints some pretty and not so pretty pictures.

If you trust your imaginations.....read the book first.

Having read the book (twice)....I am still interested in viewing the film at some point.

Put your head to work....read the book first.
...because after viewing the film you might be less motivated to read through the entire book as a whole.

Watch the movie, so this way, you won't be disappointed as much when they Hollywoodized the film.
But I think you will like both.

I sometimes like watching the movie first. The book is always more detailed and usually better. After seeing the movie and I read the book, I have a bit of a visual to the story.

There are only two possible answers to this question:

    1) Yes, you should read the book first, or

    2) It doesn't really matter one way or the other (usually because they're both crap).

Never is the correct answer, "Oh yeah, you should definitely see the movie first."

Agree for the most part, though often times you'll miss out on the movie's little nods to the larger book world if you haven't done the reading.

The book is outstanding. Especially if you have an interest in science and like learning a little.

I don't understand . Can you answer in double talk and rhymes like you normally do ? ;)

Why can't you just post normal like this in your own Scott Ostrosky thread when someone asks you to clear something up ? We now know you can post like a normal human .

Everyone should really listen to the audiobook. It's a major reason the book got as popular as it did. The narration in it was stellar and it won every award possible for an audiobook. I actually had a hard time believing Damon was Watney because the guy who read the book just nailed the tone.

Here's the first 6 minutes as a sample:
