I'm thinking of learning the Java programming language. It seems like a good place to start since it's the go-to language for Android development and it runs on everything within a virtual machine. It's also object-oriented, which means it's a good start to move on to C# (Microsoft) and Xcode or/and Swift (Apple).

    Thoughts?

I'm 28 with a decent enough skill-set to get by and work a semi-decent job, but and I want to expand my horizons and possibilities in life. Now seems to be the right time.

If I was trying to learn Object Oriented Programming- I'd probably start with C#, and use the free edition of Microsoft's Visual Studio. Much more accessible IMO.

I learned Java and the Android platform a few years ago. It was fun to make apps and test them on my phone. I would reccomend it as I had no prior programming experience. I can't speak for other programming languages.

You'd make more money getting Baddfunn to take you as a plumbing apprentice.

C3P0 was fucking worthless. 6M languages and he never knew the actual language. It was always an older dialect.

C# is excellent . . . it's the best OO language. MS just released a new free version of Visual Studio and all the cross platform ASP.NET 5 stuff is probably less than a year away. Azure has gone from "meh" to great. MS is doing a lot of very interesting stuff right now. If you like writing mobile applications you can write native apps for iOS and Android in C#.

I also like Google's Go (golang) quite a bit. It's not OO but is very simple and cross platform. It's a good systems language if you want to write applications (or things that would fall into the "scripts" category) for more than the web and devices.
