Pat Summitt, legendary former basketball coach at the University of Tennessee, died Tuesday morning of complications from Alzheimer's disease. Summitt, the winningest coach in NCAA Division I basketball history, was 64.

Summitt was diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type in 2011, and stepped down from her role as head coach at the University of Tennessee a year later. From 1974 to 2012, Summitt led the Lady Vols to a 1,098-208 record with eight national titles.

What a shame--early onset is scary. That's so young to go from that awful disease. :rip:

Alzheimers doesnt progress that quickly, especially not to death. Im thinking they are holding back the true cause of death.

Although I hate when espn forces women's sports on people I give her respect for being th best at what she did

I'm pretty sure that early onset progresses more quickly. Could be wrong though.

As Summitt settled into her seat in the first row, waiting for takeoff, the flight attendant in the jump seat opposite her began to sob. "What is it?" Summitt asked. "Tell me, what’s the matter?"
It turned out that years ago, upon leaving the floor after a game at Louisiana Tech, Summitt had spotted a girl in a wheelchair at the mouth of the tunnel. She walked over, dropped to one knee, and said, "Don’t let the way you are now define who you will be. You can overcome anything if you work at it."
That little girl grew up to be the woman who would soon be getting out of that jump seat to work that flight, and for the moment she was overcome with emotion at having the chance to thank this woman who foretold how she could control her fate

that's a nice and sappy story
