    I visited Pompeii a few years ago. You basically have a city that had volcanic ash dumped on it so it is preserved as it was back then. This was 79 AD, so for those that are religious, this is what the world would like right after the death of Jesus. The city is huge. They had big homes and bakeries and bars. They say the people that died were mostly the poor and servants. The rest knew ahead of time about the volcano and were able to get out in time. You can walk through the city and see the houses and merchants. The bodies are behind gates along with other valuable artifacts. You see people preserved from 2000 years ago crouching, praying, or holding hands. It's an interesting trip if you can do it.
