So I really want to know how good pumpkin beer is that Richard won't give it up to sit in with Metallica. I bought a six pack today of Saranac pumpkin ale. It was between the Saranac or the Magic Hat pumpkin, but I decided on the Saranac. I drank one with dinner. It was just ok. Didn't taste terrible but it wasn't great either. There was a subtle hint of pumpkin and spice after you swallow. If this is what all pumpkin beers taste like, than Richard truly is a gigantic dumb ass. This shit isn't that great that he devotes two months of his life to it.

Anyone know of a better pumpkin beer that's worth trying?

The one I had I really liked was Sleepy Hollow pumpkin beer. I forget what part of the country I found it on though. I prefer the pumpkin beer that is somewhat heavily spiced. Dogfish Heads was too good if memory serves me right.

I've tried the Sam and I didn't really notice a difference from the other beers I've had.

    1. Schlafly Pumpkin Ale (pumpkin pie in a bottle - though not overly sweet)
    2. Southern Tier Pumking (about like the Schlafly)
    3. Brooklyn Brewing Post Road Pumpkin (good price point, very solid)
    4. Hoppin Frog Barrel Aged Double Pumpkin (aged in whiskey barrels)

Ace has a pumpkin cider coming out soon, that sounds interesting - though Im not much of a cider fan.

Pumpkin brews are great - as are pumpkin donuts, pumpkin coffees, etc.... would I want any of that shit year round, hell no. But as a seasonal - hell yes.

The best pumpkin beer I've had was in Salem, MA. back in 2003. There's a restaurant/brewery there called Beer Works that had it on tap. It was also my first time having pumpkin beer, so that may have colored my opinion of it (besides it being on tap and not in a bottle). But since I live on the West coast, I had to see if I could find it around here. Back then there was nothing, but each consecutive year, more and more breweries were making their own version, and now it's pretty easy to find. I've done some extensive research, so far this is the champion: Shipyard Brewing Co.'s Smashed Pumpkin. It only comes in $9.99 pint bottles. But it's also 9.0% so it's pretty much all you need for the night if you aim to get fucked up, ha.

This is a new entry this year: New Belgium's Pumpkick (the brewery that makes Fat Tire)
It's pretty good, but it's a different spin on pumpkin beer as they add in cranberry for the 'kick'.

This ia my favorite. You can taste the cream, the pie filling and the gtahm crust but its not heavy. Just very drinkable

Rumballs named the other two top Pumpkin beers......
