Reddit Bans Groups Over Harassment, Raising Questions Of Censorship

The online community banned groups that criticized gays, blacks and others

Online forum Reddit said Wednesday that it has banned five groups dedicated to ridiculing gays, the obese and blacks as part of an effort to curb some of the abuse that the site has notoriously attracted in the past.

The ban, announced on the site by CEO Ellen Pao and other executives, comes as Reddit wrestles with how to make the site more mainstream while also preserving the free-wheeling community discussions that have made it popular.

The banned groups, known as sub-reddits, include two dedicated to criticizing fat people as well as three other forums where people attacked blacks, gays, or transgender people. The most popular of the five appears to have been r/fatpeoplehat, which Reddit says had more than 5,000 members.

Some Reddit members reacted angrily by accusing the site of heavy-handed and arbitrary decision-making. In a comment just below the announcement of the ban, a member posted a list of other groups dedicated to abusive and taboo topics that remained up. Fellow members responded with substantial support, or “upvotes” in Reddit lingo. Meanwhile, right wing news sites accused Reddit and its CEO of censorship.

Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, a well-known figure in the tech world, defended the site’s decision. In a post on Twitter, he pointed to a comment by another Reddit member to explain when harassment becomes unacceptable.

“When we are using the word “harass”, we’re not talking about “being annoying” or vote manipulation or anything,” the comment said. “We’re talking about men and women whose lives are being affected and worry for their safety every day, because people from a certain community on reddit have decided to actually threaten them, online and off, every day.”

Law professor James Grimmelmann, who writes frequently on Internet issues, observed on Twitter that the decision marked a move away from Reddit’s original commitment to unfettered free speech. But he noted the problem of harassment also presented a philosophic challenge.

It's a paradox of tolerance for diversity; protecting "authentic" communities requires setting enforceable boundaries around them.

    — James Grimmelmann (@grimmelm) June 10, 2015

Wednesday isn’t the first time Reddit has banned groups for violating abuse guidelines. Last year, after a public outcry over hackers posting private nude photographs of celebrities, Reddit shut down a forum called “the fappening” where many of the images appeared.

Reddit may also be under pressure to combat abuse after the site raised $50 million in funding last year from high-profile venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and others. The investors will eventually expect the site, which is independent operated, but owned by the same holding company as magazine giant Conde Nast, to attract more mainstream advertisers that would otherwise shy away from being associated with harassment.

Reddit is a privately owned site, people accept a TOS when they register. People crying about censorship are the ones that can no longer spew racial slurs on a website. Get over it.

Some people just cant get it through their thick skulls that most website communities dont want any part of racism and other hate. Their are many sites dedicated to hate suck as stormfront. Why dont people register there and spew all the hate they want? I'll tell you why, people want to be on mainstream sites spewing their ignorance because they are to much of cowards to join a real hate site and draw attention to their racist hate.

There is no free speech online other than what the owner/admin allows. Free speech only exists for you if you open your own website then you can dictate the rules. Not hard to understand bro.

Reddit specifically says they stand for free speech. They have stated that they will not ban distasteful subreddits in the past.

Then they should stick with it. I was only assuming and commenting on what a typical TOS contains.

We stand for free speech. This means we are not going to ban distasteful subreddits. We will not ban legal content even if we find it odious or if we personally condemn it. Not because that's the law in the United States - because as many people have pointed out, privately-owned forums are under no obligation to uphold it - but because we believe in that ideal independently, and that's what we want to promote on our platform. We are clarifying that now because in the past it wasn't clear, and (to be honest) in the past we were not completely independent and there were other pressures acting on reddit. Now it's just reddit, and we serve the community, we serve the ideals of free speech, and we hope to ultimately be a universal platform for human discourse (cat pictures are a form of discourse).

Yishan Wong former CEO of reddit

Nobody is debating their legal right to ban user subs, what people are angry about is the sudden reversal of what made Reddit great to begin with. Nobody is looking for someone to get arrested over this. As a matter of fact, many fat people who are prominent in the community have come out against the perceived censorship.

There are subs for abortion pictures, rape advocates, hot dead chicks, pictures of dead children, outright racism against all colors. The reason fatpeoplehate was banned was because it had over 150k subscribers, the most of any of the controversial subs

The thing about sub reddits like fatpeoplehate, is that it gave people who are going to have these feelings regardless, a place to spout their hatred without it spilling out into the greater community. It was easy to block the sub so you never saw any content from it, and for being about such a distasteful subject, they were very strict about doxxing, brigading and any activity that might leave that particular sub.

In the wake of this policy change, now the entire site has turned into fat people hate pictures and videos, the opposite reaction to what they were looking for. If you just glanced at the front page of Reddit today, you'd think Saruamon was killed by the CEO of Reddit and an army of Ham Planets.

I went there during the fappening and that is one of the ugliest sites I've seen since the geocities days. Terrible layout with those weird branching thread replies.
