In 1963, the Beatles feeding frenzy opened the AM radio floodgates spawning a rapid succession of British rock bands that lasted for the next 3 years and produced a great new rousing genre of music.

Obviously the Stones, Moody Blues and The Who went on to become seminal rock groups for all the ages. Beyond them, let's talk about the groups that may have been the genesis for other groups or singles artists including Clapton and Stevie Winwood, or the groups with a short shelf life.. or were only 1-hit wonders.

While The Monkees certainly fit that era, and their lead singer Davey Jones (RIP) was a Brit, that band was specifically auditioned and assembled for the TV show in America by Americans FYI.

Great topic. I love all that British Invasion stuff.

That song from The Searchers, "Needles & Pins", was co-written by fucking Sonny "Tree 1, Sonny 0" Bono of all fucking people. The lyrics are actually kind of sadistic, which is something Cher accused Sonny of being.

And one day she will see
    Just how to say please
And get down on her knees
    Yeah, that's how it begins
She'll feel those needles and pins
    a-hurtin her, a-hurtin her

Take it down a notch, Marquis De Sade.

So many songs from that era were stolen from black American artists and repackaged. The originals are cool, but I almost always prefer the British Invasion versions, white boy that I am.
