If you see someone claim a prize that large right away, they are friggin morons. You need to take time to set up trusts, make arrangements where to park and invest the money, etc. Anyone with a brain is consulting a lawyer and a financial planner before collecting a prize that big.

And if your state allows it, you allow your lawyer accept the prize for a blind trust that doesn't have your name attached to it.

“We are thankful and blessed for the rare gift that has been placed in our care. We have engaged a team of advisors to educate and guide us through this process so that we can be good stewards of these new resources,” they said in the statement.

Here in Illinois you only have something like 60 days to claim the winning ticket otherwise the make you take the annuity.

Practically free of charge. I only ask for three beers apiece for my co-workers.

Right. From the article: California Lottery Director Hugo Lopez said in a news release that it took so long for the Acostas to claim the prize because they “assembled a team of legal and financial advisors to help them make the most of this windfall and prepare them for their new life,”

Now they just have to figure out what to do with all the new found relatives who will no doubt be showing up on their doorstep with hands out.

Smart people. You now have as much as A-listers so you might as well protect yourself behind a gated community with security and keep where you live secret from everyone including all relatives.

I won $20 on a scratch off soon after they started a lottery here. I felt like I had won the lottery. :fdrum:

Since then, I bought maybe 5 real lotto tickets. I'm not sure I've ever had even one number right.

Kinda sucks that the winners can't request anonymity or something, since the lottery people are placing a huge target on them by telling everyone that they won.

Some states allow you to claim the prize under a blind trust, retaining anonymity

Wait until they have to call the cops on their distant, long haired, partially retarded, pain in the ass "cousin" from San Diego.
