As thorough as the Transportation Security Administration screeners may be as they rifle through your belongings, the agency isn't performing where it counts.

In a series of trials, the Department of Homeland Security was able to smuggle fake explosives, weapons and other contraband past airport screeners in major cities across the country, according to ABC News. Officials briefed on the Homeland Security Inspector General's investigation told the station that the TSA failed 67 out of 70 tests conducted by the department's Red Teams -- undercover passengers tasked with identifying weaknesses in the screening process, NJ.com reports.

During the tests, DHS agents each tried to bring a banned item past TSA screeners. They succeeded 95 percent of the time.

The internal investigation was designed to find the TSA's most egregious vulnerabilities. The TSA has said Red Team agents are "super terrorists" who “push the boundaries of our people, processes, and technology,” but DHS officials told ABC the test results were frustrating at the very least.

    ABC reports:

In one test an undercover agent was stopped after setting off an alarm at a magnetometer, but TSA screeners failed to detect a fake explosive device that was taped to his back during a follow-on pat down.
Officials would not divulge the exact time period of the testing other than to say it concluded recently.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson was apparently so frustrated by the findings he sought a detailed briefing on them last week at TSA headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, according to sources. U.S. officials insisted changes have already been made at airports to address vulnerabilities identified by the latest tests.

All the TSA has done is make it take much longer to get to the gate. Taking off shoes does nothing. It's all for show.

Come on. This article is waaayyy too negative. It should be "TSA Stops Bad Guys 5% of the Time." We seem to expect a lot from our airport security.

Those are private contractor defense jobs - not exactly Post Office or civil service jobs. The sheer amount of lobbying cash these defense contractors have dwarf many countries GDP's. In other words, don't blame unions for this bullshit.

I know somebody coming back from a store opening that left 5 box cutters in their carry on bag by accident and got through security with no problem.

This. Unions have no real power in this country anymore. There has been a systemic effort to weaken them for decades. Union money isn't what it used to be, and when we're talking about defense contractors, we're talking a relatively small amount of companies getting the bulk of that $1T/year spending. The sad thing is how much we paid Blackwater and Haliburton for security, infrastructure, and food services. Those private companies got billions to do work that our own military once did for a fraction of the cost. Our own troops are getting limbs blown off for peanuts, but Blackwater security forces were paid hundreds of thousands per person. Repubs think that privatizing is the answer to everything, but when we're talking big government money, there's a lot at stake and all the money winds up in the hands of the well connected few.

I used to travel with a small radio in a hard case.

Every time I traveled with it, they had to inspect it. I would stand there watching these idiots try to open the hard case (it had a simple latch).
Four times out of five, I had to open it for them.

Then for the radio itself, they would be mystified by it. I would feel like a time traveler with some odd device they had never seen before.

It is pretty clear they have idiots working there. I no longer travel with a radio.

TSA is nothing but a glorified mall security guard. I can tell you this, at Newark airport they all look like they were just slinging burgers the day before or they are fat angry reggies.
