RIP Buddy Ryan, 82, the cantankerous architect of the iconic '85 Bears defense, the "Monsters of The Midway" many consider to have fielded the greatest defensive single season ever in the NFL, who even ended up fighting with his head coach Mike Ditka.

    1.
“I don’t think coming in late hurt his chances. I think because he can’t punt might hurt his chances.”

    2.
“I don’t know what his status is. I don’t even know who he is.”

    3.
“Dumb guys sulk and pout. You never see smart guys pout. Hey, they are paid very well. If they don’t do the job, somebody’s gotta get on ’em. The good players always react the way they should.”

    4.
“He probably checked the job market out there and found there wasn’t a lot of demand for return specialists that won’t block.”

    5.
“Cap Boso? How could I cut a guy with a name like that?”

    6.
“Trade him for a six pack; it doesn’t even have to be cold.”

    7.
“I could hardly see across the field, and I’m sure they couldn’t, either. They’d run a play, and I didn’t know who had the ball or what was going on.”

    8.
“I think with me what you see is what you get. But some people don’t like what they see.”

    9.
“It’s good to have friends, but you want to beat them just like you do your enemies.”

    10.
“Football kickers are like taxi cabs. You can always go out and hire another one.”

    11.
“We might have the worst bunch of guys together we’ve ever seen as a football team. I don’t know what anybody else has, but I’d trade mine with anybody, sight unseen.”

    12.
“The Cowboys knows we’re going to beat them, they just don’t know how.”

    13.
“Oh, I like that middle linebacker that you got. He’s a hell of a player. He’s big, he’s fast and he’s tough. I think he’d qualify to play for me.”

    14.
“Coaches didn’t like it because it made them look bad. We hit a lot of quarterbacks, and that was one of the things coaches were a little tender about.”

    15.
“They’ll have to be carted off in body bags.”

    16.
“It was so easy my wife could have made them, and she didn’t even know these guys.” [On the team’s roster cuts]

    17.
“Mr. Halas hired me to coach the defense. That’s what I did.”

RIP Buddy. Steeler legendary coach Chuck Noll was asked whether he had trouble making the final required cuts after preseason. He replied "No. I have trouble stopping."

I liked it when Jimmy Johnson told reporters he had something to say to Buddy but he ran his father ass into the locker room and when asked about Johnson's comment Buddy replied how hurtful that was because here he was trying to lose weight and Jimmy goes and says a thing like that.

I was always impressed with Buddy for protecting one of his players and taking all the subsequent abuse, as I believe Cris Carter was facing a suspension for drug use.

    http://www.twincities.com/2013/02/1...-i-had-gotten-clean-with-philadelphia-eagles/

If I can go back in time, I’d probably go right before Buddy Ryan cut me, to change it. I would do exactly what I did with the Vikings (get clean, which would have meant) I never would have come to the Vikings.

I knew exactly what Buddy was doing. He told me he would never reveal my past (drug and alcohol abuse) to anyone. Someone asked him a question, “Why did you cut him?” And he said, “Well, he only caught touchdowns. He wasn’t a complete receiver.” It was what he decided to do to try to protect me.
