Swiss artist H.R. Giger, who designed the creature in Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror classic "Alien," has died at age 74 from injuries suffered in a fall, his museum said Tuesday.
Sandra Mivelaz, administrator of the H.R. Giger museum in Gruyeres, western Switzerland, told The Associated Press that Giger died in a hospital on Monday.
Giger's works, often showing macabre scenes of humans and machines fused into hellish hybrids, influenced a generation of movie directors and inspired an enduring fashion for "biomechanical" tattoos.
"My paintings seem to make the strongest impression on people who are, well, who are crazy," Giger said in a 1979 interview with Starlog magazine. "If they like my work they are creative ... or they are crazy."
Born Hans Ruedi Giger on Feb. 5, 1940, in the southeastern Swiss town of Chur, he trained as an industrial designer because his father insisted that he learn a proper trade.

His tribute article on Huffington Post was nice. The highlights being that when his artwork was first displayed in conservative 1960's Switzerland, the locals spat on the windows of the gallery. Also, he is flattered that so many people have tattoos of his artwork. He started wearing all black because, as a draftsman, the India ink he used wouldn't show up on his clothing.

I don't care how commericialized he became. Give credit where credit is due, he was skillful and influential.

Sometimes commercialization isn't all bad. It means he touched people with his art. I've never met a dullard who appreciated him.

I'm not embarrassed to admit that I have the monster from Alien (3 of them!)
I also have a PeeWee Herman doll and the spaceship from Mars Attacks!.
I found them all at various yard sales for like, a dollar. I also found a Mad magazine board game for .50.
That was years ago, though. I don't collect stuff anymore. It's kinda dumb.
    Anyway, RIP Giger.

Wasn't quite sure what to think when I opened up the Dead Kennedys, Frankenchrist album to find this (by Giger):

One of the best scenes from Alien was when they discovered the space jockey. Masterful and eerie concept that captured the mood perfectly, courtesy of Giger.

I was bummed that they didn't make the Engineers larger in Prometheus. Looks like they should have been about twice the height of a human.

He died from a fall, that just bums me the fuck out. He truly was unique and original as both a human being and an artist. I'll miss him, but through his multitude of works he will live on forever. :sadbye2:
