in Billboard’s newEddie Van Halen cover story yesterday, Eddie Van Halen had a lot of weird shit to say. But along with such gems as the revelation that the last album he bought was Peter Gabriel’s So in 1986, he also said some not-so-flattering stuff about, well, most of his Van Halen bandmates who aren’t actually related to him. He was most critical, however, of exiled former bass player Michael Anthony, claiming that “Every note Mike ever played, I had to show him how to play. Before we’d go on tour, he’d come over with a video camera and I’d have to show him how to play all the parts,” and saying shit like “Mike’s voice is like a piccolo trumpet. But he’s not a singer. He just has a range from hell. Mike was just born with a very high voice. I have more soul as a singer than he does.”

Anthony refused to get into it with him, reportedly responding, “I am proud to say that my bass playing and vocals helped create our sound. I’ve always chosen to take the high road and stay out of the never-ending mudslinging, because I believe that it ultimately ends up hurting the Van Halen fans.”

But it looks like Sammy Hagar, on the other hand, has no compunctions about wading into the mud to defend his friend’s honor. In a new two-minute video uploaded to YouTube entitled “In Defense Of Mikey,” Hagar stands up for Anthony and tells Van Halen off for basically being an obnoxious bully:

I kinda agree with Hagar except for the the Michael Anthony is one of the top five bass players in the world. Anthony is mediocre. He fit in well with Van Halen, but to put him with guys like John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, Flea, Jack Bruce, etc. is laughable.

i believe eddie on this. i dont see it as an insult tho
u can be the greatest musician in the world, and a person creating a song and still ask/show u to play it a certain way.

right or wrong, eddie took it as a betrayal when MA went to play in another band.

That somewhat contradicts what he wrote in his own autobiography. Ha.

Jesus Christ, can't these fucks just ignore one another? Neither has made a relevant contribution to music in 20+ years.

I think Eddie probably drove Anthony away. I mean other than Alex Van Halen, has Eddie ever had a relationship that didn't end badly? And even some of Eddie's and Alex's fights are legendary. Eddie may be a great guitarist, but he is an absolute cancer.

But Eddie said that Anthony didn't know how to play and Eddie had to teach him the chords. It is different that Eddie wanting him to play a certain way and had to show him.

M.A. was a crucial part of he band's sound. Eddie invented a bullshit story just to get him out and Wolfie in. Nobody wants that Wolfie shit. He should have found his own gig in life. I'm glad to see Sammy sticking up for the truth.

A little different than what Eddie said in Billboard Magazine:

    Read more at http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/ed...as-a-singer-than-he-does/#UAVvplQd31k7aeIc.99

What Sammy said probably meant that Eddie would tell him what to play based on what he composed, but Anthony could play. Eddie is saying that Anthony is so incompetent as a bassist that he had to be taught how to play everything.

its not unreasonable that it would be true. eddie is a fkn @sshole, but i dont see him as a BSer or media hound.
10s of 1000s of professional guitarists indirectly were taught by eddie.

just because something is true, doesnt mean it should be said tho

I would think Wolfie would be the bass player that Eddie had to show how to play note for note because he didn't know how.

If they just pretended to get along, they all would have made millions more in touring.
