Samsung: Whether or not we ripped off Apple’s tech, Apple stole it to begin with -- Provides video evidence of a tablet built by Mitsubishi to show that Apple's patent on pinch-to-zoom technology should not be valid because it already existed for years before the first iPhone launched

TED talk where the guy shows where Apple ripped off all their gesture features from. Included is a video from a demo Microsoft did, that used the gesture controls, over a year before Apple showed them to the public. The person from Microsoft also said tech like that has been around since the 80's.

Apparently Apple has the patent on tapping a phone number to call it. That's so fucking stupid that you can patent simple intuitive shit like that.

This isn't about stealing, or cheating, or anything like it. You don't get to lock up an innovation for your exclusive use if it wasn't your creation in the first place.
If someone else had the idea first and decided not to hold it hostage, be grateful they're sharing with you. Don't try to claim it as your own and extort everyone else.

Kind of like when Howard steals bits from people, then accuses Jay Leno of stealing them from him.

The GUI was Xerox. Apple used it for their Mac. Then Windows used it. Then umpteen other OS developers used it. Now every developer of an OS, from Android to webOS (hate to say it, webOS was fucking great), uses it.

This shit could go on forever.

And didn't MSFT intro the tablet like 10 years ago?

And didn't Palm do the PDA, which was the precursor to smarty-phones, years and years ago?

Fuck's sake, you could take this shit forever.

Should we still be tipping Edison for the light bulb and the Wrights for the plane?

    Shit is ridiculous.

    And fuck Apple.

Xerox not only came up with the idea of a GUI, but also mice, right clicking, folders, drag and dropping, cut and pasting and about a billion other standard operating system features we take for granted, and really didn't get to profit from any of those ideas before they were stolen by Apple and Microsoft. That said, patent and copyright laws as currently written are ridiculously outdated and really stifle innovation when you can patent something as trivial as the way a menu bar scrolls.

This is all a lie of epic proportions. Everyone knows that Howard invented the Ipad and Iphone. Oh and the Sim card....for the love of God...the Sim Card.

Totally with you on that one. Patent law is one of those things that really helps inventors invent (or at least that's what they were initially intended; now the big corps routinely steal inventor patents and challenge them to try and sue. . . see Home Depot per the saw in their store), but when we're talking this petty bullshit, it can really dampen creativity.

Here's an oldie but goodie satirizing the absurdity of some aspects of patent law: http://www.theonion.com/articles/microsoft-patents-ones-zeroes,599/

apple is a joke. they have a patent on the term "App Store" and have sued everyone else who has tried to use it. you have to be insanely greedy to trademark a phrase equivalent to "grocery store".

about five years ago (before smartphones) i had to jump through endless shady computer geek cyber hoops to try to play songs i had bought from itunes on a non-apple mp3 player. they already had my 200 bucks, and i had worthless songs i couldn't take anywhere. sure they have put out some good products but it takes a shitload of underhanded business practices and asshole moves to get your stock all the way up to 590 a share. fuck them.

"even if we did shoot the ex-Nazi concentration camp guard 60 years later, it's ok because you know he must have killed lots of people during WWII"?

that's Samsung's defense? "it's ok if we broke the law because even though Xerox never tried to defend their claims, Apple did the same thing first?" with all their money you'd think Samsung would hire lawyers who actually studied patent law: a real lawyer would know you have to defend your claim when first discovered in order to retain your rights. If Xerox was upset or felt injured by anything Apple allegedly did, legally they had to defend it back in the 1980s when they originally discovered it, or they waive their rights to it. Xerox effectively abandoned their intellectual property long ago so Samsung's lame argument is worse than lame: it's legally naive.

Google’s Motorola division has filed a new patent lawsuit against Apple claiming they are infringing on seven of its patents and wants to block iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers from being imported to the U.S.

Pretty sure this is the reason Google bought Moto in the first place. I love how google makes patent trolling hilarious. It's no coincidence that they are doing to apple exactly (almost word for word) what apple has been doing to samsung. I honestly think they are doing all this to demonstrate how ridiculous patent law in the US is.
