    AG Lynch Testifies: Justice Dept. Has ‘Discussed’ Civil Legal Action Against Climate Change Deniers
    Attorney General Loretta Lynch testified Wednesday that the Justice Department has “discussed” taking civil legal action against the fossil fuel industry for “denying” the “threat of carbon emissions” when it comes to climate change.

    During Lynch’s testimony at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said that he believes there are similarities between the tobacco industry denying scientific studies showing the dangers of using tobacco and companies within the fossil fuel industry denying studies allegedly showing the threat of carbon emissions.

    He went on to point out that under President Bill Clinton, the Justice Department brought and won a civil case against the tobacco industry, while the Obama administration has “done nothing” so far with regard to the fossil fuel industry.

    Whitehouse concluded his comments by posing a question to the country’s top law enforcement officer.

    “My question to you is, other than civil forfeitures and matters attendant to a criminal case, are there other circumstances in which a civil matter under the authority of the Department of Justice has been referred to the FBI?” he asked.

    “This matter has been discussed. We have received information about it and have referred it to the FBI to consider whether or not it meets the criteria for which we could take action on,” Lynch answered. “I’m not aware of a civil referral at this time.”

    The problem I have with this sentiment is why does it have to be "climate change"?

    Who freaking cares? Isn't pollution, health, and dependency on other nations enough reason?



    I was raised to think a warming trend was the answer to all our prayers.

    Fossil fuel industry is financing systematic climate change denial. They're causing injury and just like any other industry that is doing so they need to be dealt with. Free speech isn't absolute. You can't advertise a product making false claims.

    Why can't you yell fire in a crowded theater? You can't cause a problem that hurts others. Same thing with the fossil fuel industries assault on science. Even the pentagon has said that climate change is costing us big time.

    You deniers need to accept the fact that you've been the victims of marketing hogwash and move on to joining the rest of the world in working on solutions.

    I don't deny climate change. Do you deny the oil industry has saved billions of lives which in turn fuels climate change? I'll hang up and listen.

    Saved billions of lives? Ok, but what does that have to do with reducing our dependence? Higher fuel standards, investment in renewables and other measures need to be taken seriously like yesterday. Making this a political issue is the penultimate in stupidity. It's like politicizing the cure for cancer, oh but I guess we do that in this country too so that's a bad example.

    They keep claiming everything is gonna "kill jobs" and it never happens.

    I don't deny climate change but I don't care and nobody else does too. Everything we use today causes problems for the environment, from farming, transportation, building roads, to houses, to building our computers, tablets, cell phones, solar panels, electric cars, etc.

    If you are not living off the grid, not buying new items, shopping thrift shops, growing your own food, driving a bike or electric car or living like the Amish or a indigenous tribe, then you are a huge hypocrite.

    Cause and effect. Nothing wrong with trying to cure problems. Our dependence and our desire to save lives got us to where we are, I have faith in mankind.

    I don't deny that big corporations are part of the "Powers that be". But, understand that large monopolies are propped up and protected by governments. They don't exist in the wild without them.

    The reason we can't get rid of the oil and gas subsidies is because half of congress is owned by them. If we could get the big money out of politics then we might have a chance at bringing these behemoths down to a level where they should be.
