I've never worn glasses/contacts but over the past few years have felt my vision deteriorating. After testing I am a good candidate for laser surgery so I'm getting it done after vacation in a few weeks (vacation then sick time FTW). My current vision is 20/100. ZOINKS!!!! I scored perfect at my shooting qualification last year. :dontknow: :jj:

    How much?

Will you get full disability when they burn your retinas to a crisp?

Your ability to see red may diminish. Hence, green last sights.

No laser sights allowed at work. I'll see how well my astigmatism is fixed and if I can use a red dot (Aimpoint) on my AR.

Is your insurance not covering most of it because this is considered elective surgery?

I am in the market for an AR-15, can you give me some recommendations of manufacturers and what prices I should be expecting?

Still worth it! I would do it again, even though I need readers now.

Most places offer interest free financing as well.

They do and I qualified. I was expecting it to be around $2.5k outta pocket so if I can't scrape up the rest in a few weeks I'll just put whatever is left on the financing.

They had options where I could keep some of my near vision intact but I figured the trade offs weren't worth it. Cheater goggles are a no-brainer.

i've thought about it over the years but i decided against it.

surgery is surgery. if only a tiny % of people who get it have life long negative effects, that's too much of a risk for me. without reading, i'd be lost.

i'll only let them cut me if it's to save my life or make me young and handsome.

    or rich.

My standard health insurance doesn't cover it, I imagine, since it is an elective procedure. I do have supplemental eye care coverage and that covers $800. Better than nothing.

The AR market is dizzying. For a solid no frills I think the S&W M&P 15 is hard to beat. Chrome lined barrel, forward assist for about $700. Stag, Windham Weaponry, Rock River are also good values for a few bucks more with lifetime warranties and solid reps. Plenty of other pricier options as well depending on what features you want. If course you can't go wrong with a Colt for around $1000.

I opted for the Ruger SR-556 since I am kind of a brand loyal dope and have great dealings with them and their products in the past. It is "piston driven" so it runs a bit cleaner than the direct impingement AR's and had some other features that I wanted.

Lots ya to choose from.......have fun shopping!
