Quite the contrary. It's simply a descriptive term for the origins of the sport. My uncle told me, so it must be true.

A violent encounter on a basketball court led to an aggravated battery arrest in Volusia County.

The game was supposed to be a friendly game among students, teachers and staff at Holly Hill Elementary School.

Travis Mims, 27, and Katherine Martin were playing when Mims allegedly fouled Martin and became increasingly aggressive, according to the Holly Hill Police Department.

Surveillance video: Teacher slammed to ground

Surveillance video shows Mims, a school advisor, pick up Martin, a teacher, and throw her to the ground, according to police. Police said she hit the basketball court head first.

"I've seen him in the lunch room. I never believed that that would happen," said parent Kathleen Reed.

Authorities said Martin had substantial injuries to her head, midsection, feet and toes. She stayed home from work on Thursday.

Investigators said Mims admitted throwing her, because he said she pushed his face with her hands. He was charged with aggravated battery.

Some parents call the incident an attack and said it sets a bad example for students.

"If a child's seen this, they're going to think that that's OK to do that. So, yeah, this is horrible," Reed said.

Mims was released from jail after posting $2,500 bond.

He resigned from his job Thursday. He was hired in August and had just completed his probationary period.

"Totally out of character, total shock," said Steve Lochte.

Lochte, father of gold medal swimmer Ryan Lochte, couldn't be more surprised. Lochte is head coach of the Daytona Beach swimming club team, with its home base at the Port Orange YMCA. He hired Mims a year ago to work with 10-year-olds in his off-school hours.

"Just raving reviews about his teaching capabilities, his interaction and his passion as far as teaching is top to none," said Lochte.

Before Mims coached a team, he was a lifeguard at the Y with no complaints from either organization.

Based on U.S. swimming policy, Lochte suspended Mims on Thursday, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Lochte spoke with Mims by phone and shared only that Mims knows he made a terrible mistake.

A WESH 2 News crew knocked on Mims' door for comment, but he did not answer.
