Anyone have any recommendations? I'm looking for something small, outdoor, wire-free and "smart" (can use with iphone).
Some motherfucker stole something off my front porch last night. I wish I had them on camera....

Whatever you don't get buy Lorex brand. I just installed them on the outside of my house (not wireless). The software and app sucks dick. Technically it works, but it's a major pain in the ass and not worth the trouble.

If it's a covered porch, the easiest is Dropcam.

I'm sure people have a lot of great recommendations but we used Dropcam at the office because it was all set up 5 minutes out of the box.

    • 60 Second Setup - Use your computer to find your Wi-Fi network, live stream in under a minute.
    • High Quality Video - Get into the details with 720p high-definition video.
    • Fast and easy setup - online and securely streaming 720p HD video in 60 seconds.
    • Field of View - 107 degrees diagonal, plus Night Vision and Zoom, means you don't miss a thing.
    • Cloud Video Recording (CVR) - Review footage and make clips with optional secure offsite recording.
    • Stay connected with Two-Way Talk, Intelligent Alerts, Scheduling and Mobile & Web apps.

At least replace your doorbell with this:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N2ZDXW2/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_EHzFvb1BSVMCP

I got it and it is pretty good. It also has a motion sensor. It alerts you through an app if someone comes up to your door without ringing the doorbell. You can talk to them through the intercom even if you are not home. You have to pay for cloud storage ($30 per year).

Sounds interesting...does the cloud recording require any type of monthly fee?

This looks pretty close to ideal. Any fees (for the cloud stuff)? I'll have to look into temperature issues too if it's meant more for indoors...our temp ranges from crazy cold to pretty hot and humid.

Yes. It might not be cost effective for a person that wants a single camera or has a DVR they want to record to.

But we linked a few together on the plan, plus it interfaces with our smoke detectors and Nest thermostat, so it was worth it in our case. I think it's around $100 a year for us

...id like to ask you, are there any wires at all associated with dropcam install and how often does the battery have to be changed?

    :thankyou:

There are many systems available and more on the way. Too many to list. I like my surveillance cameras.

I was already looking at the Nest thermostat set up, so that would make sense. A hundred a year isn't too bad at all given that you don't have to deal with that end of things.

They all need power. Unless you are going to start hooking up solar panels and batteries. just buy a drill bit and wire it. I would recommend you go Power Over Ethernet. The wires are very small, and you can start pushing bandwidth.

I need to identify a creature that is getting in and out of an attic.
This place has no internet. Can drop cam footage be saved to laptop on the other side of the wall 5-10 feet away? Night vision.....true night vision or just low light shenanigans.

I don't believe so. The initial setup required getting on our wifi network.

I was looking at some of the wireless.
    Some take funky expensive batteries.
