In a few weeks, Uber will start using self-driving cars to carry passengers in Pittsburgh, raising the stakes in the fast-track race to deploy autonomous vehicles.

The ride-hailing company said Thursday that customers will be able to opt into the test program, which will use autonomous Ford Fusions summoned by the touch of a smartphone. Although other companies are testing self-driving cars on public roads, this is the first time the public will get access to them.

Because, we as a country have such a surplus of work. We should have cars driving themselves and do away with as many jobs as possible. That makes sense

    Thanks Obama

Does anyone remember the guy who died watching a movie, while his car was driving him down the road?

The fact that these things can be hacked is a compete turn off. I'm all for new technology but until theses things are more popular with low rates of crash I wouldn't ride in one. Even then I would still be concerned.

I can't fathom how these would be allowed onto public roads.

This is Uber's long game to fire all their drivers and have autonomous cars pick you up. But I'm not sure it is a good fit - it might cause their extinction. Most people don't like the Uber company, they like the driver. When other companies such as Google, Chevy's Lyft come into the fray I think Uber will be the last company people call for an auto-taxi.

Nobody will be driving cars in 15 years. Young kids will be laughing at their parents for buying cars and driving them in the old days.

I always heard that when we finally get the driverless tech it has to all driverless on a particular road or highway or none. Experts say monkeys and computers will never be able to share the road.

My mom grew up in New York City before moving to Pittsburgh for college.

She said even though Pittsburgh is like 1/20 the size of NYC, it is so much easier to get around in NYC than Pittsburgh because of all those damn rivers and bridges!

Total publicity stunt by Uber. Each car will have a human safety monitor in the passenger seat just in case.

You see ads all over metro NYC for Uber drivers- I don't think Uber is doing that well.
