Selfie Stick Saves Teen Girl Trapped In Rip Current

The drama began when Derrick Johns, his wife, and daughter Erynn, 16, were swimming off Nantucket, Massachusetts, on Tuesday. An unexpected rip current pulled them underwater as Erynn valiantly clutched her selfie stick.

"I inhaled a lot of water at that point and I just I couldn't breathe under there," Erynn told an ABC affiliate. Her father grabbed the other end of the selfie stick to keep her head above the water. She made it to shore and volunteers rescued her parents from the waves.

The dangers of selfies led Russia to issue a selfie safety public service announcementthis week. But it seems the narcissistic devices aren't all bad.

If you're ever caught in a riptide, don't panic. Float on your back, signal for help and let the current carry you. It likely will quickly weaken, and may even return you to the beach.

it's nice that she told us that she's unable to breathe underwater. I get confused about whether or not people can do that.

I got caught in a rip tide in the outer banks-not fun or funny. I had no idea what it was but my husband did so he helped get in. It was the first time I ever had flippers on and they were weighing me down-I'll never put on flippers again!

Perhaps two arms and two hands would have come in handy.

If you're caught in a rip current all you have to do is swim parallel to the beach until you're out of it. The reason people drown in it is because they panic and try to swim through it to the beach which is impossible to do.
