This is one of those obvious things but it's interesting how the problem is becoming so big.

I looked up this Body dysmorphic disorder:

This describes Wiggy to a T! I guess that's why he sees a shrink all the time. It's just that it ain't working.

you know that merely being a scientist does not exclude you from being insane or wrong, and that being a social scientist pretty much guarantees that you are in need of therapy?

19-year-old Danny Bowman's selfie addiction spiralled out of control, spending ten hours a day taking up to 200 snaps of himself on his iPhone.

The teenager is believed to be the UK's first selfie addict and has had therapy to treat his technology addiction as well as OCD and Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Part of his treatment at the Maudsley Hospital in London included taking away his iPhone for intervals of 10 minutes, which increased to 30 minutes and then an hour.

"It was excruciating to begin with but I knew I had to do it if I wanted to go on living," he told the Sunday Mirror.

You don't think having to take pictures of yourself and post them on your facebook page on a regular basis along with telling the world what you are doing from hour to hour is narcissistic?

I think this issue is related to the one where parents constantly have an eye buried in the camcorder (or smart phone video) at all kids' events. Hey, mom and dad, how about taking a good chunk of time to savor moments that will never return and will never be done justice on a video clip? Plus, you record so much shit, there's no way you will ever edit and put it all in watchable form in the future.

I'm all for recording a few reasonable things for posterity and remembrances, but some people now spend near-zero time living in the moment.

nope. i think certain generations are very into online socializing and need the attention. i think it falls within the range of "normal" now. its difficult to compare to earlier decades because the ability did not exist then.

do you think that posting on this board is different from posting selfies? i think they are just different ways of self-expression and socializing: i think they are just trying to connect and are searching for social approval, which are pretty normal forms of rites of passage. younger people are more likely to be first adopters of new media forms but i think the goals are the same as they were in past generations.

depends upon what you do on FB. I don't usually see older people posting selfies but i do see them posting things they think are interesting and want to share, very similar to when someone pastes an article from the NYT here/

becoming a scientist does automatically mean your ideas are right, and in the social sciences it is more common to be in therapy or in need of it as many are attracted to the fields to find out why they are the way they are, or why others are the way they are. One of my best under grad professors got into it because he finds the causes of abnormal behaviors fascinating, and because he figured he was a bit nutz. he was right on both issues, and turned out some good papers.
