A retired Marietta, Ohio, police officer’s K-9 will be auctioned off despite his offer to buy his former partner, according to KTLA sister station WJW.

Officer Matthew Hickey and K-9 partner Ajax were together for four years, the station reported. Hickey, who had served on the force for 30 years, recently retired.

Initially, he was given the option to buy Ajax for $3,500, but that offer was subsequently “rescinded,” according to a GoFundMe page set up to help Hickey keep the dog.

This guy gives 30 years to the force, and then gets a nice kick in the balls

Ohio state law is getting in the way. Technically, Ajax is the property of the city of Marietta. The law says that a police dog’s handler can purchase the animal for just $1 if the dog gets too old for K9 duty, or if the dog becomes sick or injured. But if the officer leaves the force while the dog “is still fit for duty,” that officer “forfeits “ the right to directly buy the animal.

“The dog is property of the city of Marietta,” Marietta Law Director Paul Betram IIItold WBNS. “Because it is personal property, it is treated like a shovel. That's just the way it is.”

City Property. First thing that came to my mind.
There should be an exception for this rule just because it's not always black and white and sometimes when everyone says "we have to follow the law" you just have to step back and say, in this case, it's wrong.

That makes the city look like dickheads. Just make an exception and give the guy the dog.

That's what I would want. A dog that will arrest you for not picking up his shit.

Shitty move but they do put some cash into getting those dogs trained. I see both sides kinda sorta.

    I hope so

sure the dog is property, but it's a living breathing animal, they set a price and he was willing to meet it. They should make an exception for living breathing "property"

    yup
they shouldn't have agreed to the sale.
