    I think our parents'/grandparents' generations were too uptight, but now the pendulum has swung too far the other direction.....

    Shame is more a Japanese cultural phenomenon; here in the US, we used to rely on guilt. That is, until we raised generations of people who are apparently incapable of shunning guilt.
