Apple is running out of interesting tech and phone sales are slowing. Apple bought Beats, should they buy Sirius? What else could they buy with all that cash to make them interesting again?

Sirius is a dead company walking.

Most all of us have internet on our phones now. Pretty soon (should have happened already), every car will have a dock where you just drop your phone in and get access to lots of services through the data connection. So you will be able to use Pandora or listen to podcasts or whatever you like. You will also use the data connection for live map data through your car's built-in screen. No more proprietary GPS systems.

As soon as data is everywhere, Sirius is no longer needed for anything. They will only be a content company. And what content do they have? Stern? LOL!

Sirius has been dead for years. Apple stock = $$$$$$. Sirius = less than your monthly membership

You do realize Pandora has yet to make money and would have died long ago had it not raised a huge cash reserve.

Sim cards. Apple is holding on to their cash for a big SIM card play. You can put that in your pipe and smoke it.

CNBC had this topic last wk or so.....

maybe Jim Cramer talked about it too.

Apple's pay service , Itunes Radio, doesn't have as many subscribers as anticipated.
Sirius also has NFL, MLB , other live sports.
a problem is Liberty Media's John Malone still owns 53% of Sirius.

It is no secret that investors no longer love Apple like they used to. Cramer believes the tech titan should put that massive $231 billion cash hoard to work and buy Sirius XM.

"My position has not changed: you should sit tight and own this stock, not try and trade it," Cramer said.

Apple needs to merge Siri with Sirius XM, Cramer said. Acquiring the under-appreciated Sirius XM could kill two birds with one stone.

The subscription satellite radio business could dramatically boost Apple's service revenue stream. Sirius could also give Apple a serious presence in the automobile infotainment space, which Cramer thinks is the next frontier for technology.

"Anything that puts Apple on the path toward owning the automobile would really brighten the company's long-term outlook," Cramer said.

Still can't get data out in the middle of nowhere on a long car ride, or more importantly, in an over the road semi truck. Truckers keep Sirius alive since they need something to listen to on a long haul where large chunks of it get no cell service. They also never have to keep flipping around the dials every 100 miles or so. People underestimate the value of Sirius to truckers.

"Robin, if it wasn't for me, Apple wouldn't be buying Siruis/XM"

exactly this. I remember years ago on the WUS, Jason said it would be great that Sirius had a podcast for the Stern show. This was before their App.
Fast forward years later, now Sirius/XM have a app and you technically don't need a Sirius/XM portable/vehicle radio, just a portable device to connect to a Bluetooth speakers or wired/wireless receiver with speakers.

early in 2015 Jeff Jarvis called in and told Howard about the internet being the future and Howard basically ignored his theory.
And I think with Howard 360, Howard knows it true

Not sure what that has to do with anything??

The reason investors are putting money in Pandora is because this is a fight for users. Pandora has them. Lots of them. They have a future. Sirius has a hugely expensive infrastructure that works well for one thing (one-way data transmission to a broad area). Data connections are *far* superior because they allow two-way communication. That is a game changer and it will be what kills Sirius in the not-too-distant future.

Sure, lots of truckers in the USA, but that pales in comparison to the population as a whole. The long haul truck drivers who don't get good data connections and who care enough to pay for satellite is a small enough group that isn't enough to support a satellite constellation and the cost of the talent to create the content.

The cell network is growing and expanding coverage constantly. For a subscription service, it would be worth it for companies like Pandora and/or others to partner with the cell providers to fund the cost of building out the cell infrastructure along interstate truck routes. But I think the number of dead zones is pretty small, especially on major highways.

The stock market isn't buying your logic.

Sirius is valued at $26 billion and makes $1.6 billion in cash a year. Sirius share price is rising.

Pandora is valued at $3.3 billion and loses $160 million. Pandora share price has also dropped from $37 to 14 in the last 18 mos.

When Howard renewed his last deal, didn't he say that HowardStern.com would be renovated with state-of-the-art content and they would start doing a lot of cool shit with footage from the show?

I thought he had big plans for this new contract.. Or is the waiting for when Howard 102 comes out?

@Benjamen do you remember exactly what Howard promised when he signed a new deal? I remember something about HowardStern.com and video content... perhaps like an onDemand deal via the site? I forgot exactly.
