This is totally anecdotal so I'd love to hear input from others.

I work as a Bartender in Vegas, my employer would rather fire me than give me overtime, if I or a coworker is more than 15 minutes late we better have a good explanation, apologize profusely or get ready for a job hunt.

I have a friend who works as a cook, union gig so he's taken care of. If he goes past 8 hours he's going to get chewed up. He's so dedicated to his restaurant that he commonly comes in 30 minutes early and doesn't clock in, if the wrong person saw him do that he could be in deep shit.

I think Overtime is great to see on the paycheck but I'm not getting it. And that just sucks. Only in a freak occasion do I ever see more than 40 hours on my check.

I think it's hurting businesses and most importantly workers. I and I assume most wageslaves would rather do more work and get paid for it than be capped at 40.

It's a good thing it makes people think twice about pushing people harder than they need too. My wife work 10-12 hour days salaried if she was getting time and a half they'd think twice about those meetings at late/early hours.

Why would we get rid of something that stops employers from taking total advantage of us lowly workers? I'm glad for it, time and half after 8 and double time after 10, it's rare at those rates my personal life is going to be interrupted very often and I'm glad.

Don't bartenders make a majority of their pay by tips?

True, I once had a shift where the person who was supposed to relieve me bailed and I had to work 14 hours, that was terrible and I was slap happy at the end of the night.

I think 8 is a terribly low number though to cap a normal shift at though. Hell I would love a job where I could work 10 hours 4 days a week. That would be awesome.

Of course, and an extra hour of work could easily mean another $20-$40 in my jar. So yeah I really don't care much for the hourly wage as so much the chance to work longer.

That works for you, but I'd guess that you don't have kids? An 8 hour days is somewhat in tune with family life. Get the kids off to school and be home in time for dinner and weekly activities. It's pretty critical for a family.

I don't know man, for a few years starting in middle school I did my homework at the library and got picked up at 4 pm by my mom who was then working a day job.

I think families can shift around hours to a degree, and hell if you're in medicine or law or an entrepreneur you're probably working more than 8 hours.

Paid vacations and sick time should also be eliminated. While we're at it, 5 year old kids should be working in the coal mines again!

I get time and a half after 40 which I usually hit at Wednesday afternoon

And double time after 12 which I normally get 3-4 times a week
    Totaling 6-8 hours

Remedial jobs are not deserving of overtime pay, up your game son and get some.

As a computer worker the law specially exempts me from overtime. I've worked 9a-2am many times on projects and got nothing for it but a attaboy....so you union slugs can eat a dick so far as I'm concerned

We should get rid of overtime pay because you can't show up on time?

Depends on the job. I work in IT - I am expected to work overtime without extra pay every day - but I like to think my salary covers the extra hours worked.

The American approach to work is inhumane and vomit-inducing.

work to live, not live to work, comrade :grad:
