Sinead O'Connor: I won't sing 'Nothing Compares 2 U' anymore BY Ethan Sacks NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Tuesday, March 17, 2015, 6:23 PM Jason Kempin/Getty Images Sinead O'Connor, pictured performing at New York’s Highline Ballroom in 2012, is vowing to stop singing her signature hit. She's just as sick of the song as you are. After 25 years of singing her signature hit, "Nothing Compares 2 U," Sinead O'Connor took to Facebook to warn fans that she crooned the Prince cover for the last time. "After twenty-five years of singing it, nine months or so ago I finally ran out of anything I could use in order to bring some emotion to it," the 48-year-old singer posted Monday. "I don't want audiences to be disappointed coming along to a show and then not hearing it, so am letting you know here that you won't." It's a bold move by the Irish chanteuse: the song was the biggest hit of 1990, clinging to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts for four weeks. In the process, "Nothing Compares 2 U" turned the darling of college radio into an international superstar. That fame, though, had its drawbacks for O'Connor. She was deluged with hateful backlash after tearing up a picture of the Pope during her "Saturday Night Live" appearance in 1992 and underwent a public meltdown on Twitter 20 years later that made news in the gossip glossies around the world. "If I were to sing it just to please people, I wouldn't be doing my job right, because my job is to be emotionally available," O'Connor wrote on Facebook.
