I used to be a huge fan, til he gave in to neck car, man on man action, and horse racing! Although I kind of like his new tv show, quick and out!

Good article - I used to be a Rome listener but went cold turkey a few years ago. Rome is the Howard Stern of sports talk - used to be edgy but now produces tired material. Like Howard, he also:

    - has opinions that "evolve" (used to crack on NASCAR until it became popular and said people who bet on sports were gambling degenerates, but later used some of his big bucks to get into owning race horses)

    - "takes lots of vacation because he gets a lot of vacation" (sounds like someone else with a flexible schedule)

    - sold out his bro when he fired long-time friend and producer Travis Rodgers, and after subjecting the listeners to long stories about Travis over the years, gave the departure a ten second mention at the end of a show

    - recycles material - he reads "takes" from the radio show verbatim on his lame TV show just like Howard uses the radio show to generate HTV content

I agree about Travis, he dicked him over. Travis always takes the high road when discussing it but Brian Beckner cracks on him all the time.

Actually read before you comment. It's not about being in the Houston Press, it's who it's written by.

Rome is great, still listen all the time. He was talking going to satalite about 5 years ago, but I think he saw how Howard fell off the face of the earth and nixed that idea. He has mellowed a bit, kids and getting older does that, but he's not the complete sell out Howard is. Rome has never pissed on anybody as far as I know, and his wife really dosent want to be famous. I have no idea what she looks like.

I never said it was. But, I'm not surprised considering the source and recent shows. Out!

Santee, Reaction! The old Van Smack was entertaining sports radio and the regulars brought content. Soft and sell out is never pleasant for the OG listeners but unlike Hanks show Rome has new listeners often and this is all they know. Ooot

LOL. I went to a Houston tourstop that had Monty launching golf balls from the upper deck. Old callers like Bobby from Brooklyn chasing down rats with baseball bats and Jim from Fall River with donkey noises in the background were great.

I hadn't listened to Rome since the early 2000's when I used to be driving from jobsite to jobsite during his show. I caught bits and pieces after getting an office job and noticed a more typical sounding show with sound drops and the like.
