I've had this offset smoker for about 10 years, which is probably 5 years longer than I expected it to last. This picture is a couple years old. Since then, it has accumulated a lot more rust and all of the wood, shelves and handles, have broken off or rotted. I really want a new Big Green Egg but can't afford it right now so I thought I'd bring this one back to life on a budget.

It had 2 hard plastic wheels before so I got some Harbor Freight Chinese pneumatic tires and mounted 4. It pulls through the yard much easier now.

I sandblasted and ground all of the rust off. Then I sprayed with no surface prep. It looks pretty rough but it shouldn't rust again for a while.

The new shelves are cedar so they shouldn't rot anytime soon. The new handles are oak.

I added a couple of ports on the side so I could slide my temperature probes in without pinching them with the lid.

I have a prime Brisket Packer in the freezer. I still need to oil it up and burn it in before I cook on it.

I made some baffles so I could adjust the flow of heat. The right side is usually a lot hotter than the left so these should help. I have three. I also plugged up every hole in the entire smoker to make temperature adjustment a little more accurate.

There was a lot more I wanted to do but I didn't want to spend any more money. I was going to completely seal off the bottom where those baffles are and have the smoke travel the length of the smoker and come out on the left side, then I was going to move the chimney over to the right, making it a reverse flow smoker. I was also going to gasket all of the doors for better seals and put latches to hold the lids down. I was going to put a new vent on the end of the fire chamber so I'd have more control. I still may do that.
This is a new charcoal basket I made. The old one was all burnt out. It's going to be raised several inches off of the bottom, where it is sitting right now.

Well, that's about it. I hope to use it sometime early next week to make that brisket. I'll try to remember to take pictures of that.

Here's a nice picture of a wall of crushed cars being used to prevent erosion along a riverbank.
