America only makes shitty cars.? Is this your excuse for driving foreign? By the way my best vehicle has been a 2002 Ram i use for work. 200,000, never under 85 mph on freeway. Only have had to change oil and brakes. Yeah, fucking piece of shit.

The American cars have made great strides in reliability over the past couple of years. I drive the shit out of my vehicles, I drive my truck like crazy. I put 375k on my American truck, original engine and transmission. I sold it to a guy who was going to use it as a work truck, still looked good. My wife drives an expensive American car, if I don't take it to get the oil changed it wont ever happen. She also only puts about 6k a year on it. I do take care of my vehicles though.

I don't like to buy jap but sadly many of the American cars are made in Canada and Mexico while production of lots of the jap cars are in the US.

    I haven't bought a jap bike since I was 19 though.

Is that a diesel engine in that bad boy? Our (American) trucks are great - the smaller cars that compete more with Hondas and VW's are cheaper but the the Hondas are generally a little better quality so it might just be a matter of getting what you pay for. We've had some "shitty" Chevy's and Pontiacs well into the 100k's and one over 200k as well.

All German vehicles drive great, really do but the reliability is shit except for a few models, 3 series BMW as an example of being reliable.

I did get well over 200k on the VW, and although there were issues along the way they were mostly electronic, not mechanical. Engine ran great, passed the emmissions test etc. It did go through a mysterious problem for a month or so a couple years back where it would just not start. But then it started fine and kept doing so for two more years.

There are exceptions, even some models but overall they aren't what they used to be where hippies could get a microbus and drive it to dead shows for decades. My neighbor has a new five series BMW but never keeps them for over two years because of issues. Can't imagine the hit he takes on depreciation.

There's definitely something super-durable (although completely uncomfortable by today's standards) about the air-cooled VW engines.

They had to be durable to compensate for the terrible driving.

'05 Silverado. 125,000 miles. Besides oil and brakes, I've replaced the battery. (on warranty.) Never broken down or left me stranded.
Most dependable vehicle I've ever owned.
