haven't we long-assumed that howard pays for callers to come on air at 6:06am and say "hey howard, man, i was just watching [transcendental howard TV programming] on howard TV and holy shit man that was awesome..... howard TV is so great and awesome when is [next piece of transcendental howard TV programming] coming out?"

i mean this isn't just a howard thing, i'm pretty sure that ~50-66% of callers to political talkshows are sitting in some calling center somewhere with their scripts of talking-points to use with client radio shows all over the country.

Reminds me of that scene in Talk Radio where Barry has his wife at the time call in. Probably guessing a few jocks have people in another room at the studio call in for whatever reason they need to plug whatever it is they're plugging at the time.

If it is true then it would be in character for the Stern empire to exert control via contract clause. Classifying a regular caller as staff/intellectual property would allow for such a contract to be drawn.
At its very basic could include:
    exclusivity to the show
    confidentiality agreement
Howard retains all rights to the name: '(wackpacker name) from the Stern Show'

The concept of another person owning a public aspect of your persona is quite abstract.
Imagine how terrifying and controlling it could be in the minds of the broken people who make up his regular callers.

The existence of a caller contract is speculation but Howards controlling nature is not.
...was reminded of Eric Nagel (Opie+Anth) discussing Bubba the love sponge obsessively buying the copyright to the nicknames, personal photos etc of his own staff and interns without their knowledge.

wasn't hanzi saying that regular callers get paid with sponsor money by playing games.
that is true. the wigged fraud rewards regulars with prizes that should go to fans and not the gaggle of freaks that fill air time for the cheapest mother fucker on the planet!
