    While Sirius/XM has around 20 million subscribers, how many of them actually tune into the Howard Stern Show on a regular basis? I know that it is hard to know since there are no ratings. But what is your guess and why do you think that?

    I would be surprised if he had more than 500,000 listeners on any given day and wouldn't be surprised if the actual numbers dipped below 100,000. Given how boring the show is now, I just can't imagine that he has a lot of listeners.

    Mel should release how Howard's subs have been trending for the past few years, just to F with him. Unless, it's in Howard's contract, that the true subscribers can never be made public.

    And how many of them are just new car buyers who rarely even turn on the Sirius/XM part of the stereo? *raises hand* I'd really like to see how they come up with that 20 million subscriber number, and how they can still be in financial trouble with that many.

    I've made some tentative enquiries and my initial estimate puts the figure at 7. However, for marketing purposes I am prepared to round it up to 10 (for a small fee).

    78, if you include family members, employees of Sirius and THSS, and wackpackers. 34 if you just include wack packers. 11, if all of the above are excluded.

    On the live feed, especially now with the 2 hours of AGT talk, probably less than 20,000. I wish there was some way to get the stats.

    "2 hours of AGT talk"? You must not listen to the whole show. That number should be higher.

    Good question; here are some things to consider:
    1) XM subscribers do not get Howard unless they specifically pay extra; probably very few do.
    2) SiriusXM is no longer developing new Sirius aftermarket units (e.g. Stiletto), however they are releasing new standalone XM units.
    3) Most new cars being sold have XM as the default option
    4) Sirius is now the ghetto of the XM universe; almost no new subscribers coming in on that side, and lots of people leaving for the greener pastures of XM (like I did).

    Few people are listening to Howard. Hell, how COULD they listen? Frankly, the show is really just bad, not only for ex-fans, but for regular folks as well. Ain't nobody tuning in to hear a bunch of AARP members blather on about nothing.

    I have long maintained that Howard's current contract has far less to do with him broadcasting a show for fans, and more to do with SiriusXM paying to license his name and photo for marketing purposes. If SiriusXM was really interested in Howard putting on a show (let alone 2 channels) and generating quality content 5 days a week, they would have paid him to do so. The fact that SXM is satisfied with his 2 or 3 day a week schedule shows that they are not really that concerned about the content. Still, his name is generally prominently displayed in marketing. Plus, he's one of the few marquee names they have that is exclusively associated with their service (Mad Dog is another). When Martha Stewart goes on TV, nobody associates her with satellite radio--however with Howard or Mad Dog it generally is at least part of the introduction.

    Don't Sirius subscribers have to pay extra to get Howard, too? XM people have to pay for the "Best of Siri" package, but I thought Siri people had to pay for the "premium package" (which included the Playboy channel)?

    Not anymore. He's "Judge Howard" or "America's Got Talent's Howard" these days.

    Howard has at least 30 million listeners.

    Maybe as much as 60 million.

    You have to count all the sweatshop workers in China.

    I'd really like to know lthe numbers for both THSS and Nick and Artie's show, just to compare the numbers. I doubt as many people listen live to N&A as Howard (listening thread had four replies so far tonight), but if you count all the downloads for N&A, I bet the numbers would be surprising. Who knows though, I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

    "Arbitron has released its first-ever ratings for XM and Sirius, covering April-June 2007, and they show that in an average week, 1,225,000 listeners at some point heard Stern." That's the TOTAL for the week, so at any given moment, Stern has maybe a few hundred thousand listeners"

    This is the last real rating for the HSS. The shows decline since 2007 and 3 days a week must have cut the number of listeners 50%.

    Around 100-200K per day, max.

    Howard's contracts are public on the net.
    Howards job at Sirius is not to have large ratings anymore. The only thing Howard does is to get SiriusXM name out in the media.
    It would also make SiriusXM look like morons for hiring someone who looses so much money for them.

    But I would love an announcement before every show by SiriusXM where they expose Howard's lies. They have the right to do that.
    Five minutes with facts about Howard like: Howard's law suite is about getting money for subscribers that can't listen to him. That Howard already got a bonus for these subscribers with the merger bonus. That he has a wig. Beth is an ex escort. That would be great radio.

    This number is more than generous.

    I did rough math on this one, a while ago, based on the concept of "per unit pricing" of the advertising rates to determine the ratios of how many listeners are listening, when.

    Using the 1,225,000 sets of ears per week, here it is:

    1,225,000 = (live daytime listeners) + (nighttime listeners) + (noon to 7pm listeners) + (Friday listeners) + (Sat & Sun listeners)
    if x = unit number of live daytime listeners, and assuming 4 live days per week, ratios may be derived:
    (live daytime listeners) = (50/3000) (nighttime listeners)
    " = (400/3000) (noon to 7pm listeners)
    " = (150/3000) (Sat & Sun listeners) (average)
    " = (150/3000) (Friday listeners) (rough average, assuming same as sat or sun)
    Substituting into the original equation (again, this is rough), we get:
    1,225,000 = 4x + (3000/50)x + (3000/400)x +(3000/150)x + (3000/150)x
    " = 4x + 60x + 7.5x + 40x
    " = 112.5x
    x = 1,225,000 / 112.5 = 10,889 unit listeners per live, daytime show

    And, this was in 2007. You know the numbers are lower, now.

    Actually, his current contract is not. He's suing over breach of the original contract, which ran out in December, 2010. That's the one people can access, by clicking here.
