Earlier this week they sent me a gift catalog. I'm to pick a recognition gift for making 20 years. the items in it look like a "the worst of amazon.com" collection. there is an older model Dewalt drill, some older model appliances, and two "Tourneau" watches (except Tourneau is spelled wrong so they are counterfeits), and other similar items i would never look twice at.

None of the items has the company name or logo on it: why would i want it as a commemorative item without a reference to the employer? what happened to the cheap ass watch with the logo? or the pen set with the logo? are they embarrassed?

anyways passively i refuse to pick one of the items earlier this week (i threw out the letter and catalog) so today i received an email with an electronic version of the catalog to order from; i'm ignoring that as well. in the office my manager gave me the 20 year (fugly) crystal tombstone and a certificate. I put them next to the box with the 15 yr (fugly) crystal tombstone and certificate.

i want my shitty watch with the cheap ass logo!

why would you want anything with your employer's logo on it?

because its supposed to commemorate my time with them. if not, i would buy myself a much better toy than anything they would get me. for example, there's a Panerai watch i want:

i dunno. 40+ hours a week is enough. i wouldn't want to be reminded of my employer every time i looked at my watch.

when i started there was a guy in IT who read romance paperback novels every day, and he would stack them up on the window ledge when he finished them. he must have had a few hundred stacked up. he was assigned to be the expert in a monitoring package called BMC Patrol that is used to monitor system performance except nobody knew what he did so nobody ever engaged him to setup monitoring, so he read his novels.

I talk to everyone so I knew what he did, and I had him setup monitoring for one of my projects, and everyone in management was shocked because no one could remember him ever doing anything for 30 years. I got him his first raise ever, as his retirement gift.

unlike him, i have a known track record for the systems i design and implement. I just think they should give me something that says i worked here. i bet i could get one of our competitors to give me one of their logo'ed things.
