Paolo Di Canio axed as Sky Sport Italia pundit after displaying fascist 'Dux' tattoo during a live broadcast

    • Sky Sport Italia have suspended Paolo Di Canio as a TV pundit
    • Ex-Sunderland boss had been a popular fixture in the channel's coverage
    • He caused uproar by displaying a fascist tattoo during a broadcast
    • Di Canio has the word 'Dux' - relating to dictator Benito Mussolini - etched into his left arm

Sky Sport Italia have cut their ties with Paolo Di Canio after he displayed a fascist tattoo on air.

The former Swindon and Sunderland coach has been a popular fixture within the Italian broadcaster's football coverage, providing typically candid opinions and tactical insight.

However, after exposing artwork on his right arm which spells out the word 'Dux' - a reference to former dictator Benito Mussolini - the ex-West Ham forward has been axed by Sky.

A statement by the TV company on Wednesday read: 'We made a mistake. We apologise for those whose sensibilities were hurt.'
Sky also confirmed they have 'suspended co-operation' with Di Canio.

The 48-year-old, who has enjoyed a colourful career as a player, coach and pundit, is no stranger to controversy - particularly when it comes to his political beliefs.

While at Lazio, he was banned by Italy's footballing authorities for raising his arm in an apparent fascist salute towards 'Ultra' supporters of the Rome club.

I remember seeing some documentary piece about fascism and soccer in Italy (not sure if it was on HBO) and let's just say that some of those teams/fans are really out there when it comes to being pro-Fascist. So much so that the players are seen flashing fascist salutes while on the field after games.
