I believe in workers right to organize. I'm not starting another boring thread to argue over that. I has a question.

    1. Why are scabs universally hated?

I understand why the union workers wouldn't like them; they are taking union jobs. But why do non union people look down on replacement workers? A job is open. The person hired to do it has said he or she is on strike. Shouldn't I as a business owner have the right to fill it with anyone of my choosing? I would have no moral problem with working in place of someone who is on strike. (I don't know the laws either)

    2. What's this union togetherness where you don't cross a picket line if another union is on strike? Did any of you union people stop going to movies when the movie people were on strike? Did you stop driving your Ford or Chevy when the automakers went on strike? It seems like they only do it if it makes a lot of publicity.

I always got a good laugh at the non-union construction sites I worked at when the unions would have people outside protesting with a giant inflatable rat.

No. It's a serious question. Think like if Topo asked it.

See, I don't get that. They have the right to be in union but people also have the right not to be in a union.

I bet that union folks wouldn't cross picket lines for other areas of employment. The reason that the union is striking is because it is protesting working conditions. The only power that workers have against employers in this power dynamic is the strike. If other people just go and cross the line, they are undermining the power dynamic. And those people are rewarding the employer for having what the union considered to be an unfair work environment.

I was at a Costco yesterday and they have a wall that has plaques honoring several of their business customers. There among all of the serious plaques was one for Vandalay Industries. In smaller letters it said Latex and Latex Accessories. I should have taken a picture.

I believe you. I'm basically talking about some person off the street taking a job because the worker is on strike. Doesn't matter if it's working conditions or money.

Well labor law has developed around this dynamic of union collective bargaining. Like I said, the union believes that the pay is unfair, or the conditions are unfair to the workers, so they strike. People that believe in workers' rights think that the company should have to collectively bargain with the union on these issues. If they can just higher other workers, then they don't have to bargain with the union. For me personally, I don't think that people should cross the picket line because they are upsetting that system.

Unions are scum. This isn't the 1800's anymore. Thank unions for all of the outsourced overseas jobs.

That "scab" person is a fool for undermining the lawful process of improving job conditions, pay rates, etc for the contractual workforce - only to be brushed off like an old scab when the wound is healed.

I think they basically feel their main strength is solidarity...every scab makes it easier for the capital to survive the strike and break the union, in general terms.
